We've already seen the stories about multi-core ARM CPU's for the next iPhone. So to me that means iPhone 3.0 will be built on Mac OS X 10.6 with Grand Central which I think also hints at multiple stream processors for 3D operations as well.

But that's the easy stuff to predict for March 17. :-)

The other thing I see is the need to shrink the chip count to make a smaller board to allow for more heat dissipation and a larger battery. So I'll bet that PA Semi has been busy creating a 3G processor to replace the existing 3G baseband chip in the iPhone 3G. I'm also betting that since the existing 3G chip has an ARM in it that PA Semi is adding the 3G "data pump" as a "co-processor" to the multi-core ARM CPU they're designing. Apple will still tap Samsung for their proven low power chip fab and multi-chip packaging expertise.

To prevent cracking I'll also go out on a limb and say Apple will build the bootloader into the CPU package. Either a chunk of FLASH fabbed into the CPU die or a small FLASH packed in by Samsung along with the double capacity SDRAM.

This platform will be powerful enough to drive a 10" display as well. And it wouldn't surprise me if Apple didn't ship the 10" "whatever" prior to the iPhone 3.0 to work out kinks in the new platform prior to squeezing it into the iPhone's smaller denser package.

Apple will also have been busy having PA Semi fix up the A2DP problem. Much like the Sony Vaio P the next platform will have a dedicated A2DP solution to beat the power problem.

This will of course necessitate that Apple produce something akin to Sony's HBH-IS800. Which I suspect they've had for a couple years now but didn't have what they felt was a low power enough solution in the phone to release it (e.g. no new development, its already in the can)

Copy n' paste? Who knows but if they deliver all the above I won't miss it. :-)

They had better not require a hardware upgrade to use 3.0 on current iPhone - it has not been required on previous hardware and Apple has still not delivered on promises it made and has yet to deliver on current hardware (Push notifications, for instance)

It's not what I hope to see, but what I know I'll see: the demise of Palm. They had months to release the Pre before Apple came along, they knew they were on borrowed time, but they blew it.

hi,

like everyone else cut and paste, user replacable battery but also from the dev side I wish they would allow a user to install their own application for their own use without having to use app store. Also from a dev side it would be great if you could dev apps on the pc rather than needing a mac. Not needing to have itunes would also be great. Some how I doubt that Apple is going to loosen their lockin which is a shame.

There's not much, except for a better camera, battery and more capacity/speed that can't be answered with a firmware upgrade. Video, MMS, Bluetooth and turn by turn GPS can all be done with a new OS.

If I have to buy new hardware to get a fully functional phone it probably wont be an iphone, as much as I like the one I have now. Maybe a Pre. I'm a little tired of having half a feature because Steve says I don't need it. GPS with no software. Bluetooth with no audio support. Camera with no video. Maybe you'll pay to enable "features". But not me. Not this time.
