David, the Shift you are selling is not the US version but is instead the imported EMEA version. You should make that clear since it contains the Qualcomm chips that are banned for sale in the US. That’s straight from HTC.

I’m awaiting the htc shift with baited breath. Do you know if it will be available for purchase with the unlocked cell so it can be used with cingular or will it only be available with tmobile? I like the rollover of the cingular and the others don’t like to give this feature so I end up buying big and losing each month because if I buy down I end up getting gouged when my teen goes over.

Well it runs a full Windows OS so downgrading should be possible. I’d say battery life would be on par with any laptop you could buy right now,(the Shift will maybe release in Q3 of 2007). Weight… surely under 2 pounds,(this is not a pocketable device). I don’t see anything for Verizon Wireless EV-DO so that’s the only thng keeping this from being my next UMPC. Built-in Verizon Wireless EV-DO in the USA on a Origami form factor computer would be Killer Cool!

the oqo 2 and the sony ux390 have 30-60 gb hard drives
with the ux going to 100 gbs

It’s bigger than the Sony but smaller than the Fujitsu. Its an Origami device. I just wish it had Verizon Wireless EV-DO support. Let’s face it, in the USA Verizon Wireless EV-DO truly rocks.

Is this actually any smaller than a p1610d?

pocket pc thoughts reveal that it’ll run a VIA processor, and yup, a slide and hinge mechanism. Very nice – hope the more frequent adoption of VIA chips means they’ve solved that issue with the VIA and battery life (as in the TabletKiosk eo 7110).

Yup, definitely a slide and hinge like the HTC Kaiser. You can see the slide grooves either side of the keyboard.

I dig that Shift thing. I don’t think I would thumb-board on a UMPC. Too big, too weirdly awkward. I’d either not use a keyboard or use a keyboard, never ‘oh I’m holding it and now I want the keyboard while I’m holding a 2 pound thing out in front of my face!’ I’m a wannabe fiction writer – what am I going to do, try to ink my stories? There’s a reason I type them on a keyboard now… ;)

Apparently, the successor to the HTC Hermes pocket pc is going to have a similar design. That makes sense – I often find myself holding my Cingular 8525 at odd angles to see the screen when I have the keyboard extended.

I’m not so sure about the advantage… I guess all the JASJAR fans will get that one.
