HTC Shift review: UMPC Portal
Steve just finished a detailed review of the HTC Shift that’s well worth the read since we’ve seen few hands-on reviews just yet. I agree with Steve that the 800 x 480 screen is a bit of disappointment; not a step up at all when you consider the first generation 800 x 480 devices are now over 1.5 years old. Another bummer is the keyboard in Steve’s opinion: “The keyboard is good. Not VyeS37-good which means its not possible to touch-type on it, but its good for fast two or three finger typing and excellent as a thumboard too.” To each his own I say but for me: if I can’t touch type on an integrated keyboard, I simply don’t want an integrated keyboard. I’m much more productive and still just as mobile by carrying a full-size, folding Bluetooth keyboard. Your needs are likely different than mine (and Steve’s, for that matter), so make the decision that’s best for you. There’s plenty more to read in the review and while I have some additional opinions on the device, I’ll let you start the conversation on the HTC Shift.

I find it interesting when people say they cab’t touch-type on any device too big for pockets, I remember doing it just fine on first generation HPCs like the Compaq C120 that were less than 7 inches wide.
And I’ve got chubby fingers!
Actually I still have it laying around, I wonder if I could send it to HTC for retrofitting with modern innards :-D
why is it not touch typeable? It appears to be? I had a Psion which was only 6.9″ long and it was the fastest touch type mobile devices I’ve ever owned. I wish there was a modern version running windows.
