HTC EVO 4G: Sprint’s Speedy Superphone
HTC just raised the superphone bar with Sprint’s introduction of the HTC EVO 4G — the first phone ready to jump on Sprint’s fast 4G network. And it’s not just the WiMAX radio that makes the EVO compelling. From top to bottom and everywhere in between this Android phone is built for performance. Why would I say that? Look over this rundown of the specifications to see why:
- 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU
- 8 megapixel camera with HD video recording capability and HDMI out
- 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera
- Google Android 2.1
- Wi-Max, EVDO, Wi-Fi and a mobile hotspot utility to share mobile broadband with up to eight devices over Wi-Fi
- 4.3″ multitouch capacitive display at 800 x 480 resolution.
Simply put, the EVO is a potent combination. Sprint hasn’t yet announced pricing and expects availability this summer. Perhaps most interesting to me is what Sascha Segan noticed: the phone is both a “with Google” device and includes HTC Sense and seven home screens. Between the custom interface, high-end hardware and nimble 3G/4G capabilities, the EVO just might be the phone to beat this summer. Looks like the ball is in Apple’s court now.

Now i dont mind getting this phone when it comes out, my 1st year with the Sprint Palm Pre will be up this summer, still i like the WebOS ease of use UI, Palm should negotiate a joint venture or deal with HTC, they could provide outstanding hardware and Palm could provide the OS, noticing how Palm’s stock is going down, they should try whatever they can in order to survive the fierce competition, WebOS is by far (in my personal opinion), the best mobile OS out there.
I hope battery life is better than 5 minutes
I’d be a little concerned about that as well. Not so much in 3G areas, since it has a 1500mAh battery, but definitely in 4G areas. In its current chipsets, WiMax is a huge battery killer.
I really have no interest in Android whatsoever though, so this isn’t for me, but I’m sure there’s a lot of people out there who will be getting this.
It better be good, as this will replace my palm pre (of course not getting rid of it as it will be my backup phone, just in case something happens, i tend to accidentally drop phones, lol). I wonder if the XDA developers can actually take the WebOS from the Pre, and put it in either the HTC HD2 or the new HTC Evo 4G?
Joe kind of silly to make a comment that you have no interest in Android, thats like saying I have no interest in Windows, I want to run apps that I like, Android will provide the platform for mass applications like the iPhone has kind of done, do I care who makes it no, as long as it works and I have cool choices like being able to C Flash webpages
According to the specs at Sprint (http://now.sprint.com/evo/) it comes with a 1500 mAh battery to handle the larger screen and 4G network. I’m so buying this phone.

I like this. I’m seriously thinking of dropping my iPhone cuz of the bad service Ive had with AT&T when my contract ends. My cousin always told me Sprint is a good choice and it’s way cheaper. I’ve never been a fan of their phones but now I am. Either this or their top of the line BBerry.
What can an Android 2.1 do with a 1.3 front facing cam? no video right?
Just another comment here … I think that thought leaders around this industry should acknowledge that the extra step/leap needed by smartphones to become MIDs is the ability to also provide video calls. that is the missing ingredient imho. And I wonder how the Dell mini 5 is going to accomplish it with an Android platform.
Good question, but I’m not sure that everyone defines or requires a MID as having a video call capability. Were laptops not laptops when they didn’t have integrated video cameras? ;)
As far as what can Android do with a front facing camera, I wouldn’t say nothing. That’s going to be up to developers and Google to take advantage of. Put another way — if it couldn’t be used with Android, it wouldn’t be put into an Android phone. We’ll have to wait and see.
this phone will be iPhone killer?
So this essentially has a built-in Mifi? Wow. As long as they offer a large add-on battery as an accessory, this is the first killer phone I’ve seen in years.

its about time htc updated that horrible 5 megapixel camera. hopefully tue 8 megapixel will be as good as sony ericssons. im not up to speed on the wimax/4g, which countries support it? and will tue UK get this phone? it may sway me off getting an xperia x10 in september….
This phone just made every other phone obsolete. Especially the one that is made out of fruit.
EVO 4G is too big for my taste. I don’t want to walk around with a big iPad like device which does not even fit comfortably in my shirt pocket or even the pants pocket. I also do not wish to hold up a big pad like device to my ear while making a call. I think the Nexus One is just the perfect size smartphone for me.
I don’t want a thing with such a big screen hanging from my belt, coz that’s where this will most easily fit (outside of the pocket). I would look like the UPS or FedEx guys with the huge scanner hanging on their back pockets ;)
You can always have your pockets enlarged in all your clothing. Your phone is deserving of a nice cozy place to rest in. Have some compassion dude.
You cannot have this kind of power AND long battery life. I will take the awesome power emanating from the HTC Evo and just get a juice pack to extend battery life. I am still worried that Apple might serve up a bag-o-hurt on HTC that will make their heads spin.
It is easy to enlarge your pockets to accommodate the large Evo. Just ring up your tailor and get the Evo a nice place to rest. No worry as the iPhone can’t touch this and Apple is still stuck in the old 3G world. It a new world now come on Apple show us what you got.
I carried the HD2 in my pockets all the time when I was testing it. It’s not that big.
If they make a European version I’m very interested. Otherwise Dell Mini 5.
I hope my pockets are large enough to pay for this. Don’t care if it doesn’t fit in them; I don’t plan to have my testicles fried by any phone living next to them.
Manufacturers need to start making screens you can ‘actually see outdoors in sunshine’, otherwise any smart / superphone is a non-starter for me.
Sprint announced “Coming Summer 2010″.
Summer 2010 will be from June 21 to September 21. That’s 91 days of summer and 91 different possibilities.
Right now I want to say 7/24/2010 as a possible release date. Its just a hunch, I don’t have any inside info or own a crystal ball (even though it will be pretty cool)
