HP Mini 5101 Netbook Photo Tour
Today was one of those really good days. Bruce, the FedEx guy, brought me a package that was totally unexpected. It’s sort of like Christmas morning when someone brings you a package. This package was small and light as it contained the new HP Mini 5101 netbook. The 5101 is the metal netbook that HP aims at corporate users, but it is perfect for consumers too.
I will be putting the Mini 5101 through its paces, meanwhile enjoy these photos. Thanks to HP for supplying this evaluation netbook.

Good to see HP have discovered Chiclet keys. Did the machine come with the higher resolution screen? Looking forward to more in use coverage.
No, this is the standard res screen (1024×600). The keyboard is indeed nice and big.
When you do the review, can you include pictures of the battery (or batteries), particularly to see what it does to the unseen bottom of the machine? I made the mistake of getting the HP 2140 with a 6-cell (actually, they wouldn’t sell me the HD screen with a 3-cell, or even let me buy it as an option!). I suppose in theory the right-angle inch-high “stand” on the back made for a better typing angle, but it also made it horrible to get the machine into a thin bag. You’d think basic questions like this could be handled by HP’s site, but it is lousy at providing any practical details like this.
It may seem like a small thing, but an oddball battery pack can really ruin an otherwise portable machine, and none of the stories I’ve seen on the 5101 have turned it over and show what the battery bulge looks like.
Thanks.
Hi is there anyway to get the dimensions? the website says .91″ at the front can you check what the back is without the battery. i plan on getting the 4 cell… thanks
did you buy this? from where? how much?
or is this unit just a review unit.
am planning to get one. actually am teteering over either Asus N10E or HP Mini 5101.
buying frenzy i am.
This is a review unit.
I will answer all of these questions in a more detailed review coming shortly. This has the 6-cell battery which only slightly raised the back of the laptop up. The battery is not like that of the Mini 1000, it is a standard shape battery that attaches to the back of the netbook.
As an owner of a 1035NR, there are things I like about this and things I don’t. I’ll wait for the full review to give my impressions.
Does it include a backlight keyboard?
If I was just crawling out from under a rock & saw that laptop design + XP I would swear it was 2002
I don’t hate black, but that bezel and keyboard would look so much better in another color – I liked the all-bronze 2133/2140. The brown/silver Toshiba NB205 wins it for me in color and appearance.
Sans Pinetrail, this unit is rather uninteresting. I wish Intel would get it’s act together and get the next-gen Atom out before the year’s end. This 5101, same as the Toshiba NB205, is just another clearing-house device for Intel to push it’s Atom inventory.
do you think an 11.6″ screen would fit into that chassis?
