How to: upgrade the Samsung Q1 to Vista
Over in the Origami Project forums, this question pops up occasionally, so I’ll make this short and sweet for what’s probably the easiest way to upgrade your Samsung Q1 from XP Tablet Edition to Vista. First up: you’ll need a licensed copy of Vista. Next: hop over to Psybertech’s awesome listing of drivers and Samsung utilities for Vista. Follow the simple steps precisely and you should be all set. I can personally vouch for the listing because I used it myself just last week when rebuilding my Samsung Q1P. Just be sure to run Windows Update soon after your installation as there are a number of security and performance / reliability patches available.

Kevin how bout going from Vista on the Q1 back to XP? That’s the problem I’ve had. Vista seems to bog down my Q1b and I’d love to go back to XP… If only I could find a USB optical drive. Is there any way to revert without having a use the restore disks?
(Yes, i’ve tried the method of “windows.old” that i think you covered some time back, unfortunately I didn’t have the file so I think i’m outta luck.)
Thanks!
Actually popped in to offer a snarky “Yea, and is there a corresponding downgrade site to get us back to the cool comfort of XP after Vista is through clogging up your machine and making it run like chilled molasses?”
Seems Matt beat me to it.
One thing, the script mentioned there to have the Q1 recognized as a TabletPC is not needed anymore if you use the HID Drivers from here:

Yes, with the C7 VIA processor probably is a good idea to go back to XP. If you have a Q1p or just a Q1 then it’s just a matter of customize Vista. So far it runs in my Q1 as good as XP. Well, I would say better because Vista has more functionalities for touch screen devices than XP. And the recognition is a lot better.
Oh, and do not get me wrong, the VIA C7M used in the OQO 02 and the Amtek T770 can handle Vista very well. A lot better than the one in the Q1b and Amtek T700. Of course in the OQO 02 and Amtek T770 it runs at 1.5GHz. ;)
Indeed, Vista has several advantages over XP and it runs quite acceptably on my Q1. First thing I did was get a 2GB chip for thing, then did the “usual optimizations” and there was no looking back. It’s smoother than XP, it’s more capable than XP and the recognition is a magnitude better than XP. I just returned from another business trip to Europe taking the Q1 with Vista as my only computer and never once did I have a problem, even having thrown dev tools, Outlook 2007, IE, Firefox and whatever else at it.
I’m writing this from a Q1P on Vista, so it can obviously be done. :) Unfortunately the site listed no longer seems up. I wonder if Samsung asked that it be taken down. You can get all the drivers and software from Samsung although it takes some effort to find. You still must use the beta HID driver, but once you work around that, things work pretty well.
