Hands-on with VooDoo Envy’s Instant On function
OK, I am officially ticked off at HP. I have been banging on the table ever since the super-cool VooDoo Envy was announced to get my hands on one and all I’ve gotten are excuses. I took HP at their word that there were none available to shoot me so I could get my grubby little hands on one but what do I see now? Laptop Magazine has one in their office, and they’ve had it long enough to shoot a video of the Splashtop-like instant on functionality of the Envy. The Envy has a special kernel of Linux embedded so that you can power up and be in many of the communications and entertainment functions in just a few seconds. Check it out in the video and you’ll see why Laptop calls it a "game-changing feature". And that VooDoo Envy looks soooo goooood. I am so ticked off at you, HP. Oh wait, I see Laptop’s had it long enough to do an unboxing too! Grumble, grumble.

heh, i feel like calling that splashtop system a embedded netbook inside a full size laptop.
now if they stuffed openoffice in there, things would really be interesting ;)
Oh yes… I sooo want one of those! Über sexy goodness :)
Is this supposed to be impressive? Maybe booting in 4 secs is cool, since XP/Vista don’t really know how to come out of hibernate most of the time.
But really, it’s 2008, we should be seeing better features than an embedded browser.
Wow, that’s cool…but, I rarely shut my computer down, so returning from sleep is actually quicker…and I have everything. I just don’t get it.
That said, if I was a student or a mobile worker who didn’t have access to an outlet, yeah, shutting down may save a couple valuable minutes of up time per day.
The fact that you also need to have your data stored on another device limits what you can store…for instance, music.
And finally, from what I’m hearing, Vista isn’t booting in the background! If Vista was booting in the background, and with the click of an icon you could switch over when ready, well, that would make me perk up my ears.
if one wanted to boot vista in the background, it would take virtualization or something similar.
and i dont think one need to store music or other media on a external drive, only that it was one of the options.
im guessing it should at least be able to read a NTFS partition, so that one could get to the music stored on the internal drive. but im not sure about downloading something via the browser and storing it on the internal drive tho.
as for this vs sleep or hibernation, im glad to have options. this at least allows one to look for fixes online without having access to a second computer.
Ah, it’s so nice to see Kendrick experiencing being on the other side of the fence for a change! You’ll just have to console yourself with that iPhone 3G. And hp Mini. And HTC Advantage. And Celio Redfly. And … heh-heh.
They just used you long enough to assist in buying the blogosphere with their Dragon contest. ;)
Holy guaca.
Its taken this long to get LinuxBios into a device…and then it takes 10 seconds to boot.
Mmmm. I’m with David on this one.

I want to know what the heh-heh is!
Laptopmag.com might have the Voodoo Envy, but jkOnTheRun has considerate readers that aren’t bashing the video!
James: Perhaps you could get your hands on the LP2480zx LCD monitor instead.
