Freeware of the Moment: Xplorer2
Maybe it’s just me, but I tend to move in and out of my folder directories quite a bit during the day. In Vista, that’s much less a chore than in XP thanks to some of the navigational features in the new OS. For XP, it can be a little painful, but thanks to Lifehacker you can reduce the pain. Gina Trapani features an Explorer alternative called Xplorer2; it comes in both a free and a $30 Pro version, but I’d expect most users will find the free version to be more than adequate.
Gina provides a walk-through of many key Xplorer2 features such as: dual folder listings in a single pane, tabbed exploring, bookmarking folders and files, persistent FTP folder support, and much more. The tabbed exploring works really well for me in XP on the UMPC as it’s a very quick way to jump around my folder structures with the touch of a finger.

This looks like a useful tool. I don’t mind all of the clicking, but sometimes, I’ll click on an external drive and it will take forever to move from one folder to the next, especially if the drive is filled with media. I will try this out and see if it’s helpful.
I love Xplorer2, but if you’re trying it out for the first time, the free version is nowhere near as good as the paid one — for the $30, you get a “robust file transfer” feature that is invaluable for moving files over the network or from a damaged disk and a built in search about equal to Agent Ransack’s — not important on Vista, but very useful with XP.
Xplorer2 is great. I used it as primary file manager until I happened upon Freecommander (http://www.freecommander.com), which I have come to prefer. There are many, many features packed into this product which another fan can enumerate, but for myself highlights like synchronizing the directories in each pane and the oodles of keyboard shortcuts make this a delight (well, if you have a keyboard). On the touchscreen side of things, another nice feature is the ability to jump up into a parent directory by simply clicking the corresponding text in the location bar.
I’ve been using Xplorer2 for almost a hear and I think it’s absolutely indispensable. The only problem I have is that it doesn’t (as far as I can see) have an option for viewing in “film strip” mode. I work with images a lot so I find missing that feature to be a drag. Aside from that, I totally dig it and use it several times a day. Glad you took the opportunity to give this one the limelight!
