HP built a pretty weak UMPC to me. This looks like their HPC 820 which was the size of a laptop and did not sell well compared to the Jornada 720. To me a UMPC should bridge the gap between laptops and PDA's; this looks like a laptop. I want something jacket pocket size with a full keyboard. I would never buy this HP, but if you came out with a umpc with the exterior of the Jornada 720 then I would definately buy one.

The HP meeting went something like "Hey we've not got a umpc or a small notebook. Lets produce a small notebook and call it a umpc"
This is not looking ultra mobile to me at all

Bah. Some of you are missing the point here. I'm sitting here between the choice of an EeePC or a CloudBook. And I'm hoping hoping hoping hp will price this baby to make *it* my choice, instead.

However ... wtf is this business of VISTA on it?! Is there a reason it *must* have Vista? I'd rather have XP. Does *anyone* want Vista (put your hand down, jk!).

I like Lee's suggestion: a mini-TC1100 would be great! Loved that form factor. Too bad HP didn't continue it in some innovative way. I have the 2710p but it's not all it could have been. (And I hate the track stick! Touch pads all the way!)

Glad to see more devices with 8.9" screen. Can't wait to find out the price and more detailed specs.
Looks like it's going to be similar to a Panasonic subnotebook.

Couple of things - first, even under the most "liberal" definitions of UMPC, this one ain't it.

Second, while I love the resolution, the only way this thing has any appeal to me is if the keyboard is detachable and I can write on the screen - a modern day mini-TC1100 - so to speak. If so, I'm in. Otherwise, I don't need another 2 1/2lb. crippled subnotebook.

The picces at Engadget show two hinges on each side of the bottom of the unit. The specs don't show it to be a touchscreen, so it does not appear to be a Tablet PC.

This might be HPs answer to the MBA.

Al, to me the P1620 is not a "carry everywhere" device like a UMPC. While it's one of the smallest and lightest Tablet PCs a 2.5 lb. UMPC is too heavy for me to want to bring it everywhere.

According to Fujitsu's website the new p1620 with the 6-cell battery weighs approximately 2.5 lbs. So what makes the p1620 super light and the hp 'pretty hefty' if they both weigh the same?

I have to agree... it's looks basically like a subnotebook to me. Still sexy, and kind of reminds me of the old Apple 12" Powerbook. I'll bet it'll cost a whole lot more than the Asus EEE.
