Dual-Screen Kohjinsha Notebook Now Available
When I first got word about a unique notebook from Kohjinsha that had two 10.1-inch screens, I must admit I never thought it would come to market. As cool as the prototype looked to be, a dual-screen notebook is not something that usually makes it to the buying public. Imagine my suprise to see that the Kohjinsha DZ notebook is now available to purchase on the company’s web site.
What makes the DZ special is that it can be used like a regular notebook, with only one of the screens active. When two screens are needed, the second is pulled out and can be either an extended desktop or an independent screen. The graphics are handled through a combination of an AMD ( s amd) Neo processor and an ATI Radeon graphics processor. The DZ is on sale for ¥79,800, or $913 currently.

I think this is a great idea overall. However, I think the 10″ screens with a max vert. res. of 600px almost defeats the purpose of the double screen. I mean while this setup is actually 107% of my 24″ monitor wide it is only 50% as tall (pixel wise). That and the fact that many programs don’t play well below 720px high.
Now take this concept and make it a dual 11.6″ setup with a CULV chip and 9400 Nvidia GPU… and that’s a device that would appeal to a certain segment of professionals. As it stands, this is a not-quite-there product.
Good luck with reliability issues on that sliding display, as without a solid mechanism that thing will fail within 250 open/close cycles.
What would really impress me is if they pulled that off with two 18″ screens at 1920×1080 each.
