Consumer Reports Rates Netbooks- We’ve Owned 2 Out of 4
Stacey over at GigaOM mentions that Consumer Reports has not only discovered netbooks but that they’ve rated the major models. I dug out my own copy of the magazine, and I’m not surprised at all. Their top four probably won’t surprise any of our readers:
We’ve covered just about all of these here on jkOnTheRun, so you can get some insight into the Consumer Reports ratings. What’s your No. 1 netbook? Personally, I think the HP Mini 2140 and the Mini 1000 should be on this list.

Those of us locals appreciate the Wawa ad.
Hey I was so impressed with Wawa during my visit to Kevin last year that I order it online for delivery to Houston. It’s great coffee. :)
At this point, I’m using the 1000he. Overall, it’s a pretty great netbook, if you like really nice keyboards and killer battery life.
If you’re looking for a really great value, I’d go for the Eee Pc 900ha, though. It has great performance, and the size is really tough to beat.
Keyboards are a personal thing. I preferred the older Asus keyboard because they keys were sculpted. Also, the keyboard on the 1000HE has lots of give, that is, if you press hard, it seriously bows down. Doesn’t inspire confidence.
WiFi on the 1000HE is great. In my experience, it has proved better than other laptops in two different locations.
I agree on both counts. The keyboard is, especially, flexible on the right hand side.
It’s not enough to make be drop the machine, though. Overall, I think it’s an exceptional netbook.
I’m surprised the 2140 isn’t NUMBER ONE on their list – seems Consumer Reports is a little behind the times if you ask me.
The think that keeps the 2140 from being great is the battery.
*thing
Don’t read too much into this “initial” review… Not sure if this is pointed out in the magazine, or only available online, but only 6 Netbook models were compared and only 3 were given Consumer Reports recommendation – the MSI Wind did not receive a recommendation (neither did the Averatec Buddy N1030 or the HP Mini 1030).
There are also 12 additional models (from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, MSI and Sony) that are listed as “In testing” so weren’t available for this issue’s rating.
So… although it is great they looked at the Netbook category, the look is not completed as of yet.
i played around with the NC10
it does deserve to be .1
mainly because….u have to try it urself!!!
JK and KT!!
Its a shame the Eeepc 1000HE is not on the list.
Its fast, and the battery life really is about 7-8 hours.
Also, its about the best keyboard on any netbook i’ve ever tried :)
I love the keyboard on the 1000he. However, as good as it is, it doesn’t compare to the 2133/2140 keyboard.
How are notebooks with Outlook? I run a PC right now (desktop) mainly for my Outlook e-mail. I run a plugin called Outlook Track-It, which is an amazing followup e-mail reminder. I just want to be able to do these things on the new pc.
I appreciated the video review of the Acer Aspire One. I recently found out that I am the lucky winner of one from a great website related to the London Underground. It’s good to see positive comments about the device before it arrives.
