Coffee Break — Blogging on a Diet
I had a routine doctor’s appointment today and they actually got me in and out early! I can’t remember the last time a doctor got me out of their office even earlier than my appointment start time.
I was prepared though; I had taken the Viliv S5 UMPC along for the ride. I stopped off for a cool beverage (it’s 100 degrees here) and got some blogging done with the little rig. These opportunities are perfect for the little UMPC with the wireless keyboard and mouse.

You live in Phoenix?
Houston.
Hmmm. I hope you didn’t accidentally swallow the Stowaway mouse. That’s usually nearby, although I remember you featuring a folding portable mouse a while back.
It’s clear you really like this Viliv, but it just seems to me that with a Pre (you have and I have) and an iPhone (you have, but inherited a Touch from my daughter), I’d want Viliv S70, and I’m debating between replacing my Q1P with either that or the Q1UP-V. Much as I love the look of this S5, looking across the keyboard at a 5″ screen would get difficult.
Also, you were disappointed with the W7 inking on this one, though Hector made it look easy with XP Tablet on his.
But it does look like the shirt pocket experience is real with S5.
And btw, those of us monitoring your health are very glad you’ve been looking hearty and hale.
Thanks, health is good. I brought the S5 as I didn’t think I’d get a chance to work and I wanted to keep it light. The X70 would definitely work better with the bigger screen.
I saw Hector’s video and while it worked well enough for inking I wonder how well it works for serious note-taking.
The mouse was just out of camera range but was there. :)
bluespapa I can say that the Viliv S5 has come in very handy to me. It’s built very well and with the Tablet Edition on it, it’s even better for my use. :) I use to have the Q1P at one time as well. Since I do have a MSI Wind and Toshiba NB205, the S5 is perfect for those days on the run use and inking and note taking.
oh by the way taking short, or quick notes works great on the S5 so far. When walking out on a job and you put the S5 in Portrait mode, makes a nice little note pad. :) I also uploaded another video showing OneNote with inking. Its in YouTube, and I called it Viliv S5 Tablet Edition Part 2. Give you a idea on how well it works with the S5.
Thats cool. a foldup/carry along keyboard is something the iphone needs as an accessory
That and the Bluetooth profile to support the keyboard. ;)
Or a hardware connection….which is more likely to happen, now that Apple is supposedly supporting more 3rd party hardware accessories.
This pic reminds me of me in LAX circa ’98 with my iPaq and its expandable Targus keyboard… at the time I didn’t have the wifi or gsm card installed but easily could have. For posting a blog or simple tasks I’m not sure we’ve come that far except that my comparatively low powered device from back then cost me about $600 plus another $100 for the keyboard. Cost/task still seems to be the big defining metric over time.
Awesome rig…how long does it take from unpack to surfing.
A minute or less from Standby, err, I mean Sleep.
I’m loving my Viliv S5. After using it for several weeks now I have a few suggestions for Viliv.
1. Make a dock (like the Fujitsu u820), when I use it at home I don’t want to constantly have to plug things in and out and using the case for a stand looks stupid.
2. USB charger, allow the Viliv S5 to be charged via a USB cable. It may take longer but having that option would be great.
Who’s this Jake above me? If I’d known you didn’t need to pick a unique name here I would have called myself James Kendrick or Kevin C. Tofel.
It amuses me that your main device is *almost* smaller than your internet connection device. :D
I agree very inconsiderate!
This whole Jake thing is ridiculous!
I think “Jake” is the default for “anonymous,” so I expect to see it a lot.
Thanks, Hector. Looking forward to part 2.
