Can you play video from a CF card on the UMPC?
You may recall I recently purchased a Transcend 8 GB compact flash memory card for the express purpose of storing videos to play on Flash (Samsung Q1 SSD) while traveling. A lot of folks pointed out they had not had good luck playing videos from CF cards due to their slow speed which causes stuttering during video playback. I was hoping the Transcend would get past this problem due to the advertised speed of 120x, whatever that means. My experience with this experiment leads me to the conclusion that it’s not fast enough to play high resolution video without the infamous stuttering effect. It’s not a total failure for me, though. What I do is store all of the videos I’ve collected on the Transcend and then copy the video I want to watch over to the internal flash drive. This works perfectly as you’d expect and let me tell you, the Q1 is a kick-a$$ video player. I am happy to report the Transcend is very fast for moving large files and I am happy with the card even though it’s not fast enough to play video. It’s so nice having an extra 8 GB with me all the time.

James, I’ve used both the transcend rated at 150x and a lexar professional rated at 133x. The lexar blows the transcend out of the water, so there are faster cards out there. But you’ll pay a premium, though. I understand the situation is the same with usb memory sticks–the more expensive ones are much faster.
Can you try playing videos from the Trancend 8GB card from a USB 2.0 reader attached to the Q1? On a side note, Sony limit the speed of the compact flash slot in the VGN-UX90 but videos play fine on any “regular” 4GB Memory Stick Duo I put in the Duo slot. Originally I was going to use a VGN-UX90 with a 60GB HD modification to use to back up and showcase my photos on the road, but the built-in CF slot is tooooo slooooow…. with a USB card reader it takes minutes versus tens of minutes to offload my various 2GB – 4GB 50x-150x CF cards….
I have a Trancend 2 Go on my Samsung Q1.
For compressed DVD Movie with less than a CD file, no problems ! I use them with VLC (VideoLan Client)with a very good quality on small Samsung screen.
So, why the need of HD files with the need of more place on the cartridge ????
Best regards
Hi JK.
What’s your definition of High Resolutions video? What rates are we talking about here?
Steve.
The videos I have tried are either VGA @ 770+bps and XGA at 229bps. I don’t have a USB card reader so I can’t try playing them through that, which I wouldn’t be able to do while traveling anyway.
I can only confirm that I watch video on Samsung Q1 in the way, as James wrote. I keep DIVx movies on CF Card (I use 4GB) and copy one of thenm what I want to watch to the disk in Q1 for the moment I plan to watch. Mostly with girl friends on the beach.
I did not try CF Card from external reader by USB. Anyone tried with Q1?
I still wonder. Very. What’s wrong with Q1 CF socket?
The same movie, the same card, I can use in small Windows Mobile screen without problems.
Maybe some Samsung’s developer could find the correct driver at least?
I’ve got to try a 640×480 (or closest range) fairuse DVD rip on my Oragami. There was talk of MP3′s stuttering, but my 128kbps MP3 rips with MusicMatch played smooth like on my VGA Pocket PCs. I think some tweaking is needed here.
