BlackBerry Curve 8520 Arrives August 5
I think I’ve realized why the company is called Research in Motion — it never seems to sit still and new BlackBerry models pop up faster than weeds. The latest edition is the BlackBerry Curve 8520, which hits T-Mobile in the U.S. and carriers in the UK on August 5th. That just happens to be my birthday, and if I didn’t already have two phones, I might have put the 8520 on my wish list thanks to these features.
- Quad-band EDGE/GPRS/GSM support
- 802.11g Wi-Fi with support for T-Mobile’s UMA, or unlimited hotspot calls
- 256MB of RAM plus a 1GB microSD card included; support for up to 32GB of expanded storage
GPS,Bluetooth and a new 512MHz CPU- 2-megapixel camera with video recording capability
About the only item I see missing is support for speedy HSDPA, which is the same limitation in the Curve 8900. That omission makes this more of a budget ‘Berry, although there’s no official price listing just yet. It’s worth noting that RIM is touting “out of the box Mac compatibility,” so I have to wonder if BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac is coming sooner rather than later.

Forget HSDPA, this isn’t even a 3G handset.
Why anyone would buy a 2G smartphone in this day and age is beyond me…
2 MP camera – no thanks. This one’s a bargain basement offering at best.
Blackberry.com does not list this as having GPS. Do a compare against a Curve 8900 and you’ll see it is not checked.
Roy, you’re absolutely right: no GPS. I was looking at the product page and saw several features down at the bottom and GPS was included: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/devices/blackberrycurve8500/curve_features.jsp
I now see that these were generic features for BlackBerry devices in general. I’ll get the post corrected. Thx!
