I recently bought an ipod touch and have to express my disappointment. I love the hardware and the innovation that it brings, but it saddens me that the full capabilities of that hardware cannot be exploited because Apple is dictating to the consumer on how the hardware may be used and for what purpose.

In my mind, there is a disparity between the business model of the big corporations (Sony included) and the wants of consumers such as myself. I despise the fact that I can own such a capable device but be forced to use it in a manner that is so limited that I would rather not use it at all. I want to be able to carry such a slim and powerful device with me, but at the same time I don't want it to add weight to what I'm carrying as an added extra.

Please Apple.... I beg you.... either make some useful applications for this device or let third parties make them. Don't let it go to waste as a simple media device. Let it be what it was born to be - an innovative, flexible and charismatic COMPUTER!

I'm reading there's bugs in the updates from the twitterverse. Dave Winer just posted about it.
http://www.scripting.com/stories/2007/09/27/appleUpdatesIphoneLegalUnh.html

I updated mine and it's fine. I had the Installer and a few apps on before updating.

The iTunes store is sweet. Very fast and intuitive. 30 clips play right away. Searching is a breeze. Only have to enter a few letters to get your band or song to show up in the results.
I don't know if I'll actually buy songs from it. You can't use it with EDGE, which sucks majorly, and if I'm in WiFi range, that usually means I'm on a computer and would use the DRM-free Amazon MP3 store instead. Or just use my yahoo unlimited subscription.
Using the iPhone to browse for tunes is definitely faster than scrolling around in a browser though. iTunes plus tracks are supported too but $1.29 a piece and there's not many of them.

This upgrade worked very nicely with my hacked iPhone. I got to keep all my settings, SMS etc... The WiFi store is cool and I really appreciate the new UI features they added. Thank you Apple!

I can't wait until next week to kit Starbucks and experience that new capability (well, I'll probably take it to store #1 this afternoon and see if its working early... some advantages to living in Seattle.)

Those whom phreaked their iPhones are now reaping what they sowed. Reportedly your iPhone gets set back to unactivated (can't access any of its features) and even with the at&t SIM re-inserted there are reports of people not being able to come clean and activate their iPhones now eg it is the promised iBrick.
