Acer Aspire 8940G Arrives — Giant, Beautiful Screen
The good folks at Acer sent a giant notebook to Mobile Tech Manor, and I have a quick look to share. The Acer Aspire 8940G is a monster of a notebook with a screen that is 18.4 inches. It’s only been here an hour but here’s the skinny (it is surprisingly skinny for a big laptop):
- Intel Core i7- 1.6 GHz
- 4 GB memory
- 500 GB HDD
- 18.4-inch 220 nits screen- 1920×1080
- NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250M — 1 GB DDR3 VRAM
- BluRay drive
- 5 speaker surround sound audio with bass boost
- Windows Home Premium — Windows Experience Index 5.7
There will be more to come as I get some time with the Acer. Here are some photos to give you a look:

Got mine last week, but…
Volume weak at max level (any hints)
Right side USB slots not active (any advice)
Screen is brilliant though
I’ve heard that comment about the volume but this unit is plenty loud. It’s not earthshaking by any means, but even my teenage son said it was loud when I showed him the BluRay video stuff. I haven’t tried the right side USB but will do so tonight.
The last two pics remind me of the opening scene of You Only Live Twice..
LOL the touchpad is almost as big as the viliv screen!
Multitouch trackpad too. I’m really liking this so far, especially having installed MW2 on it. :)
That is definitely a monster of a notebook. Glad to see that they finally got the keyboard layout done right with a proper 4-column numpad and isolated, inverted-T cursor keys. Can you flip it and show a picture of the bottom?
How is the display on yours James? I ask because many of the models I’ve reviewed have had very noticeable backlight bleeding along the bottom edge, making dark scenes in DVD’s a problem when in full-screen. I’m lucky the display on my Qosmio X305 is perfect in that regard.
BTW: If you’re up for some MP gaming James I can take you on… ;)
I don’t notice any backlight problems, but then I’m not as finicky as you Luscious. :) Seriously, the screen is gorgeous, especially playing BluRay video.
MP will have to wait, I’m just getting into MW2 and very rookie still. That snowmobile run is killing me (literally).
I’m very interested to hear how this compares to other big notebooks, and would be especially interested in a physical comparison with a 17″ MacBook Pro (size, build quality, keyboard, etc.)
I need to know if this one is “xp mode” enabled.
In fact, I’d like to play with Hyper-V, so…
Has somebody ever tested if Intel-Vt is enabled in the BIOS?
Thanks.
Hyper v is enabled according to the MS h/w detection mode. Unfortunately, this eval has Win 7 Home Premium which is not compatible with XP mode so I can’t test it.
Thank you for the test James !
My goal is to build some kind of mobile virtual lab so, I will by 2. Maybe heavy but think about carrying 2 HP ML350 to your customer’s office…
One more thing, does the e-sata port suport power-over-esata? This is usefull for some new e-sata keys.
Let me know if you can check this.
Thank you once again.
hi
for virtual mode you can use virtualbox from sun . its much bettet than XP MODE !!!
How would you compare this to the Hp dv8t?? I’m stuck on chosing between the two and the Asus G72GX…any suggestions?
I haven’t used the dv8t so I can’ add much. I am still impressed with this Aspire, though, so it’s a solid notebook in its own right.
A few more questions, if you don’t mind…do you think that adding 2 more gb of ram is necessary, or is the 4 gb sufficient for this computer? My other question, I’ve read on a few reviews that the bluray doesn’t come with software. I’ve also read that acer arcade deluxe, which comes installed, supposedly, has software to play blu ray, so I’m confused as to whether I’ll need to buy additional software to play bluray videos. Thanks for you help.
HOw much is this laptop (Aspire 8940g) ?? im trying to look for it but cant find price..
I bought mine on Newegg.com for $1349 in February and am loving it…I was debating between this one, the Asus g71, and ruled out the hp 18 inch because of it’s mediocre vid card…This laptop has proven to be well worth it’s weight, literally! I saw that asus has a g 73 out and they seem pretty good…although they are 17 inch…I had to have a big laptop as I don’t need to/ or have the necessity to take it places too often…this is definately a sit on the lap type laptop, it needs a table or stand. Overall, I would have to say it was money well invested. It’s a very sturdy and well equipped desk top replacement!!
Oh and to answer my question above…it does come equipped to play bluray..so don’t listen to those other comments on websites elsewhere…
If anyone has any questions about this laptop…email me @ garylnyr@hotmail.com
oops…i meant *this is definately NOT a sit on lap type ….
