Repeating my usual message around this market ... the smaller it is - the more dominant it should be at the "center" of our mobile device eco-system

Much like the smartphone today provides through 3G, the connectivity for our wifi tablets, watches need to be the source of the connectivity in the end game. Then we can pass on cellphones if we want and jump to tablets. or any other combination.

I have patience, I know it will get there eventually. There also very cool ideas how to talk with a watch on your wrist.

Technology like this certainly has its place, but there's no reason that QR Codes "must die". QR Codes are and will remain the most widely accessible and efficient way to link the physical world to the online world. Anyone can create a QR Code and link it to whatever they want, whereas Shortcut is proprietary and only links to content that Shortcut has created links to, which also requires (I assume) sending the image to the server for interpretation. QR Codes can be interpreted within the app on the phone.

Don't get me wrong - it's great technology and I can't wait to try it, but why do we have to talk about killing other technologies? Can't we all just get along?

I bought my Galaxy Nexus with the intention of doing this at some stage, but I have to say, I haven't felt the urge to do so just yet. It just does so many things *right* now, out of the box - storage isn't a problem anymore, there's no major feature gap that needs to be fixed, the look of the UI is pleasing, and performance is great. A lot of the "need" for rooting is gone, showing how the platform is maturing.

That said, you don't buy a Nexus device unless rooting and hacking appeal to you. It's just that the whole wiping business is such a faff, when I've already "moved in", so to speak...

Still not a big obstacle. We're talking about a relatively small part of the overall GPS industry. Either aircraft owners absorb the cost but are given a long enough timeline to comply (sort of like a catalytic converter) or there is a subsidy of some sort, tacked on as a fee to each connection bill. The same will have to be done in farming and other heavy industries that have long replacement cycles. It's a problem, but one that can be easily overcome, not something that prevents any further progress with clearing the L-band for mobile broadband.

Easily, only if cost is ignored. FAA certification of IFR certified navigation equipment is a very involved process, taking significant investment and time. The elephant in the room is 'who pays?'.

The government subsidized the DTV transition, if you remember, with significant discounts on converter boxes, two per family. Should the federal government do the same for Lightsquared? So that they can make the projected $10 billion on the increase in value of their MSS spectrum? I hope not!

Dick, I'm old but not that old. San Jose is credited as the first daily online. Wired, of course, is a magazine. And there were plenty of scientific and tech journals published on the Internet prior to it being opened to the public in 1992.

But the main point, as Mark Potts also points out, is that there were numerous attempts by newspapers to charge for their content then and until now. We were there, worked on many of these, and remember them quite, quite well. I look forward to your full article (even pay for it).
