[...] I know a few bloggers who run daily or weekly podcasts on their blogs and these podcasts are a great hit among the blog readers. Hosting podcasts also makes it easier for you to convey your idea because for most (not all) speaking is easier than writing and if you are comfortable with speaking great stuff imprompto then it also saves you lots of time because you can record your podcast even while doing something else.
Audacity is a great app. for audio editing...especially on a tight budget. We record our podcasts using a portable recorder called an Zoom H4 that runs about $300. It's got pretty decent audio quality and can record straight to .mp3 format as well as stereo mics, xlr jack, and much more. Sometimes the dual mic is a little odd with multiple guest but using mics can get around that.

All together I think we've spent just under $500 with a few additional items that we've purchased for other things. So far they've turned out well, but we're still "learning and growing" as they might say. You can hear some of work at the USGS CoreCast website.

Great article, gave me things to think about for my own podcast (still planning!)

Not my own tip, but there was an issue of .net magazine ("Practical Web Design" for those outside of the UK) dedicated to sound and vision, podcasting being one of the focuses. Issue #167, worth a read for those starting podcasting :)
