What a timely article. I was seriously contemplating the act of making the transition on my blog http://www.entrepreneurmusings.com just last week. And here you are talking in exact steps to tread.

Well actually I tried the smooth transition approach, starting from the beginning of the year. I was moonlighting on a small scale first and then landed a couple of few months long gigs. I have been workin on steady projects for the last three months or so.

And this led me to seriously consider completing the transition, but I am still in contemplation. The screnario is different where I live. Working from home is a slightly alien concept here.

Writing this from office, I feel my tension boiling up. I am getting impatient to make the leap! Sometimes I get t urge to 'Just Do It!'

For me the clearly defined goal works best. I've given myself one year with quarterly targets to meet.

Passion also plays a large part of striving for those goals. It's not just trying to work from home for my sake, but to take care of my wife and mother-in-law.

Keep your network from your former companies. Nothing spreads faster than the word of mouth if you're doing your job in a good way.
I admit, it's just one of those things that you must really be willing to do in order for it to work properly. It's more of a mental preparation thing than anything else. As long as there's a will... there's a way (so cliche i know!)

Another thing to remember is - "Go with the flow!" I was finally able to quit working two jobs just back in May. The reason? I went with the flow, kept paddling upstream. Now some of the downfalls is that situation of having that corporate America mentality. If you can store that information for further use, and for learning, great. But if it hinders you from progressing and flowing, than you need to sit back and think.

Corporate America thinking is what stops a lot of success stories.

Great post, and one I'm living right now. I'll ad my +1 to the savings part. There are times when things just change and the paychecks stop. I have an instance where a client paid the up front, and then just stopped working with me on things. What should have been done in a matter of 2-3 months has now stretched out to 9 months, and is on temporary hold due to their own internal issues.

I wasn't prepared for this mentally, and it's frustrating. I had said no to some smaller projects based on this being there, and now it's not. The unforeseen issues in this line of work can be especially hard.
