I think in this new age where people are growing up with the internet and myspace and facebook and twiter, I think people just don’t know how to network this days and thats a sad thing. I think nothing can replace the good old business card still. Though i'm not against digital business cards, not everyone has an iPhone yet or have every social profile there is so a business card is still useful whether you're already networking with people digitally or not. Besides when technology fails you, it's quite handy to have a paper based business card ready.

I do a lot of networking and business cards are a must. People expect you to have them, and if you don't, they assume you are not a real business. Also, as many people pointed out, quality business cards really make a difference as well.

And, believe it or not, a person's business card is often a good indicator of how they do business as well. Not always, but many times.

For example, someone with a free business card with the printing company's ad on the back or cards they designed from home on cheap paper, usually are either pretty new at business and inexperienced, or they are not the type that pays attention to detail. This does not mean that you shouldn't do business with them, but just keep in mind that they are new to the game, and/or are not polished. They may be brilliant at what they do, but you may need to be a little patient about things like professionalism or attention to details. Or, they may just be broke and really could use the business, and you are helping them out by doing business with you.

People with good business cards usually are good at what they do, or at least are good at looking like they are good at what they do. At least on the surface, it looks like they have graduated to a level where they make money. And the assumption is if a business person is making money, they must be doing something right in their business, otherwise they would be broke.

Even if any of these assumptions are not true, and many times they are not, this is the first thing a lot of people think. After your attire and demeanor and website, your business card is one of the most important aspects of the first impression. Go for the good impression. It's worth the extra couple bucks.

Although we talk about becoming paperless, a v-card doesn't substitute for a "real live paper business card." It reflects who we are and leaves an impression on those we give it to.

I just ordered some personal business cards for networking. Not all of my networking activities are business-related. However, I want people to be able to find my personal blog or me on Twitter or Facebook along with my phone number, etc. Giving out my work-related business card is not always appropriate in every environment.

Agree totally, being on both ends of that transaction.

On a related note, what are people using in place of those dedicated business-card scanners and software, popular about 10 years ago, that would do most of the grunt typing for you? I had one that worked great up until about 2 years ago when it finally went to hardware heaven... and every time I go into a "reputable" shop here (in Singapore), the kids running the place have no idea what I'm asking about...
