I look for people who post tweets that are worth retweeting and fall within my area of interest: risk communication.

I only follow people who I know will have interesting/witty tweets. If they constantly post quotes, constantly retweet junk, or are XXX then I won’t follow them. Oh course, I don’t mind if they follow me, but I wouldn’t follow them back.

I agree. Twitter is about getting the best of strangers, accessing ideas and information from people you wouldn’t otherwise come into contact with.

The social part is the part where anyone can mention you and interact with you – not the following back indiscriminately.

I don’t follow those back who look like marketers, or simply if their tweets don’t interest me, lack of things in common or are offensive (racist, excessive cursing)

Hi Meryl, you’ve covered all the reasons there.

One thing I’d like to add – it’s not on your list probably because people have started to see some sense: People who schedule their tweets but don’t have the common sense to spread it around.

So at the time, I don’t see the person tweeting until x o’clock and then boom, 8 to 10 tweets in 3 minutes.

Also the person was tweeting quotes *yawn* which have no relations at all to the shared links, which pointed to articles they wrote, PPC articles to boot.

Hello, I’m starting a project web 2.0, with a twitter account, and I’ve found very interesting this article. I think that knowing subjective information — opinion — about something is the best way to offer value-added information. It means that the comments will be probably with more value-added information. Like here. So it is wonderful!

Moreover, in my twitter account I make marketing about my personal blog, but I interact with my followers, I interact with my followings and only about 10 percent of my tweets contains my articles blog (about 1 article/day). I think that interacting with followers is very important, and do it with interesting information is more important yet.

And another thing, remember that people only follows people. Anybody wants to follow a robot. Be people, my friend.

twitter is what you make out of it...

people that actually unfollow because you did not respond to their most of the time auto generated fake thank yous need to get a clue... how warped is that? really?

I can understand the people that follow and then unfollow the next day and the people that spam the heck out of the page with ads, but everything else is what makes twitter... its a mosh posh of the world.

you can try to hide the stuff you don't like, but get use to it, its always going to be there.

All of the above are good reasons. However, there's one more reason for those whose follow list has reached 2000 and Twitter deems they don't have enough "followers" to merit letting them add more (and yet, this never seems to stop the snake oil salespeople). You can't add anyone else. I find that really, really annoying.

Myself, I don't care about the "game". I just want people in my stream whose tweets I want to read. You don't have to be following me to chat with me. If I want to follow NASA, even though NASA never follows back, I will.

But it is very annoying when people follow me, then get mad and unfollow because I don't follow back. Well, hey, it could be because TWITTER WON'T LET ME FOLLOW YOU.
