You have much better control over voicemail, received faxes, routing calls to extensions, etc.

I am on vacation in California and I have a phone with me as well as laptop software phones. I can make calls with either through our office in France, or various US providers. I can receive calls from same, get email or SMS notification of message or even unanswered calls if I choose.

Go for the flexibility and be sure not to just find the lowest price, it won’t usually be good service. Skype is very good, but it’s a walled garden. Find a good SIP provider and get a virtual pbx for your soho or independent activities.
