But becoming an expert in one area does not mean you can only follow one path. For example I am a head hunter within the Financial Services sector and after 10 years in the job I consider myself an expert. The part I love about my job most is helping people find a fulfilling job.

With the GFC in full swing my services are not in demand from my clients. It has forced me to add additional slashes, I am currently writing a book that aims to help people find the perfect job by providing step by step strategies during the search and interview. I have also started my own online business with a website dedicated to provide interview techniques. And using my contacts in banking I have sought their help and begun day trading.

I recently read Seth Godin’s book called The Dip and he mentions in this book that the key to value is scarcity. When you’re the best at something, a true expert, you’ve become valuable to the marketplace because of your uniquity. I am not shooting this concept down by any means but one should consider that chasing various pursuits could come at the expense of becoming an expert at something else.
