@Celine Roque

You talk about an old post from Scott McCloud.

But the recently launched iCents.net micropayments platform is discussed in this brand new Scott McCloud's blog post:

      http://scottmccloud.com/2009/10/08/landing-on-a-dime

I would also like to invite you to have a look at our live examples. Please go to iCents.net and, at the right side of the webpage, you have links to live payments demos for:

- YouTube
- Flickr

- Facebook

Thank you!

I just started my own web design biz. I did my first two sites for free--my cousin's friends. They liked what I did so much that they referred me to their friends. I've gotten about four other jobs just off those first two. And I got to use them in my portfolio. I don't regret starting out with "freebies" at all. Of course now that I have a few jobs under my belt, no way I'd do a free one again. Too many bills to pay, and the baby needs a new pair of shoes...

I personally wouldn't engage in any spec work whatsoever. Promises of future work never eventuate because this is not in the best interest of a client that has received the same service from you for free previously.

1. If you need to build your portfolio, work on your own side projects.

2. If you need to build up a client list, use your portfolio as a selling point (rather than previous clients).

3. There are better ways to learn lessons in the freelancing industry than giving your skills away for free. Fill your RSS reader with blogs relevant to your industry and spend an hour a day glossing through the posts. Read books like Freelance Communication Guide if you need to learn how to correspond with clients - don't settle for "free" if you can learn these things the right way.

If you still decide to engage in spec work, just remember that the creative industry as a whole takes a hit. The more we cave to spec work, the more future clients will expect it.

It's a good advice to the fresh men, new graduates. There are many of them might be struggling to find a job, at least, I know there are at China. To do some freelancer job, to deliver free services, might be a good starting point.

I did a lot of free work when I was first starting out, but I was also still in school, so I chalked it up to being a part of my education. Later down the line, I would still take work that didn't pay from time to time, but I would also expect to be compensated in some way. It could be stock in a startup company, it could be valuable connections that were guaranteed, but there is a point where the value of what you are doing is determined by the least amount you are willing to charge, and if you charge NOTHING, then your clients won't see what you do as being worth paying for.
