I don’t know about you, but I often get to the end of the day and wonder just where the 40 bucks I had in my wallet disappeared to. And whenever I’ve tried to save receipts for a month to get an idea of what I’m spending my money on, they usually ended up in the recycling because it was too much of a project to go through them all. But at LeWeb, I came across Toshl, a very appealing mobile expense-tracking app that I might actually use because it’s so wonderfully simple (and free).

In Toshl, there are only two things to input to record an expense: an amount and a tag(s). The only way to enter your expenses is through your phone, which makes sense to me. Otherwise I’d have receipts stacking up next to my computer, and you know how that would end. You can sync your data with the website manually from your phone, or set it to sync automatically over Wi-Fi or other connection. And if you want to keep track of the cash leaking out of someone else’s wallet too, you can. Toshl lets you sync multiple phones, and you can create a tag for your name and theirs to see who’s spending what.

Essentially, the Toshl website is only used for viewing and exporting data. You can’t even create an account through the website; you have to do it from your phone. Your expenditures can be displayed by time period or tags in two different graph formats. With the free account, you can export your data in .csv format. With the Pro version ($19.95 a year), you have a few more options, including exporting to Excel, PDF and Google Docs.

There are a number of other expense tracking apps out there, but most have many more features than I need or have the patience to learn how to use: Mobile app ProOnGo (not free) also syncs with a website, has a receipt reader and exports to QuickBooks. Expensify (free) also exports to QuickBooks and can be used for tracking time and mileage. PageOnce (free) allows for globally tracking of all of your expenses and bills, and offers alerts and notifications. EasyMoney (Android-only, not free)can also be used for tracking both expenses and bills, and allows you to enter more specific info for each transaction. Expenditure (iPhone only, not free) has a nice interface, but it doesn’t offer syncing or graphs. SplashMoney (not free) can connect to your bank account, and also has a desktop version.

Toshl is available for iPhone, Android, Nokia Maemo and Symbian. The company plans to add more features gradually, but I hope they don’t abandon their less-is-more approach.

What do you use to track your spending?

While not so uncommon overseas, bandwidth caps and metered broadband are coming to the US market place. Time Warner is the first major cable company to announce its metered broadband strategy & prices for a small Texas market, in what can be described as draconian.

We have written about Bend Broadband of Oregon resorting to such tricks. Comcast, recently proposed bandwidth caps as well. What it means: get ready to pay more and get less for broadband. Will this spur into action, and switch ISPs or look for alternatives. Take our poll and share your opinion.

Recently there has been quite a bit of activity in the world of Mobile Internet Devices (MID). What does this new class of computing device have to offer the web worker?

Lets begin with hardware. For the most part, MID’s include:

Large, bright screens that are high resolution (for their size)

Built-in Wi-Fi

Touch screen or hardware based-keyboard

Media expansion through SD Cards

Bluetooth for use with wireless keyboards and other devices

On-board camera

Mix this fantastic array with the right software and the result is a productive device for staying in touch with your business contacts wherever you can get a Wi-Fi signal. MIDs allow workers to easily communicate via email, IM, Chat, and blogging. Additionally, with office productivity applications you can create and edit office documents, gain web access, and watch audio/video files for entertainment.

Nokia was an early leader in this category of mini computers with their N770 device. After this the company refreshed the line with the N800 and the newly released N810 (covered before).

Focusing on the N800 and N810, these devices run a version of the Linux operating system and have a full suite of available applications that allow users to: interact with email, browse the web, conduct VoIP calling with Skype/Gizmo Project, and many other tasks.

The N800 and N810 look very similar, but the N810 features a slide out QWERTY keyboard and a faster processor. Nokia released a new version of the N810 with WIMAX capabilities earlier this week at CTIA. The inclusion of WIMAX technology will mean when the WIMAX networks are built out, you’ll be able to access the net when outside of the reach of Wi-Fi signals.

Intel is also jumping into the MID fray with the release of their Intel Centrino Atom processor. These devices will be made by multiple manufactures and are being debuted at the Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai, China. The new MID devices are mostly running Linux and are being aimed at a variety of audiences: from those seeking business connectivity to users looking for entertainment options.

It will be very interesting to watch the near-term developments in this part of the computing world. Mobile internet devices, with their small size and vast array of capabilities have much to offer to the mobile web worker.
