ozSync is a great little freeware which I am currently using, fully USB portable and free (http://zia.blogspot.com/2007/11/ozsync-neat-back-up-utility.html).

Another application (non-portable but useful nonetheless) is FileHamster: it rovides real-time backup and archiving of your files while you work (http://zia.blogspot.com/2007/02/filehamster-personal-revision-control.html)
