Excellent Article Judi -- this is made up of the stuff that I keep telling people to open their eyes to: "Does an Application Create Relevance?"

What I look at otherwise is a reverse of something you mentioned "Does the application intentionally stop, hinder, or distract me while I am trying to get something done?"

Make a brochure in MS Word or Photoshop and you will get a taste for that -- formatting hell doesn't even begin to cover it.... click plague? Mad-User disease? Take your pick.

One of the most useful posts I've seen in a while Jodi. All very good points (especially the import/export feature) and a very useful topic.

The basic test that I apply before I even try a new app is a) is this solving a productivity issue that I think I face and b) given my work or play patterns, can I have a sustainable relationship with this application. Over and above that, I'll take recommendations from friends and colleagues that I trust and know will point me to something that makes sense for me or for us as a team. At least that's what keeps me sane!
