Great post Georgina! More and more I see that 'Personal branding' is getting a bad brand image itself. This is because the term sounds too aggressive I guess.
I wrote this really long comment about branding and about Madonna and the whole thing got erased.

Ahhh, the bugs of Wordpress! Anywhoo, I just wanted to say that people have done worse to get to where they need to be:

Entertainers are in a different world than web designers. They have to manipulate their brand to showcase to their audience to keep the attention going.

Only ultra-talented entertainers in their respective occupations ( Chappelle, Daniel Day Lewis ) can go without any attention and still be very credible to their audience. Others go the other route of stirring controversy to control their brand.

I see your point about personal branding, but I think you're taking a very narrow view of it. And the Madonna example is not a great one for the rest of us to follow! There are 2 elements to personal branding that I do think are important and essential to maintain:
The first is ensuring that you are able to create and maintain an online persona that is consistent with your career ambitions and the part of your image you wish to project. When recruiting, the first thing I do before meeting someone for an interview is do a google search and take a look at their blog, MySpace, Facebook etc. What I see has an influence on my perception of the person I meet.
The second part of personal brand management is ensuring that your personal brand is not hijacked by some negative sentiment or event.
Do a Google search on "RJ van spaandonk" or read my blog post on the subject at http://tim-gregory.com/2009/07/seo-and-your-personal-brand/ for more information on how this guy managed to demolish his personal brand online
