The UI is incredibly friendly, and it only took me a few minutes to figure everything out. I wrote a review on Klok from a self employed game developers perspective, give it a read if you get the time. Glad to see the developers getting the attention they deserve, they’ve worked hard on giving us a great, free program.

It supports multi-currency and has an OS X time tracking widget. Very cool for freelancers.

I like the getharvest widget better as by clicking on an activity it auto starts to time that activity again – so if you are switching between projects or tasks it is quicker. But the freshbooks tracker removes the need to input each task for the day which I like. Small features but cool. Freshbooks have made me a lot more money just by being confident in the hours I can charge.

I definitely recommend Harvest (www.getharvest.com). They provide a free time tracking widget for PC or Mac. The widget sits on my desktop — I choose the project I’m working on from the Harvest dropdown and hit “start” and “stop” – and that’s it – i don’t even have to login to my Harvest account except for once a month when I use it to send out invoices… AND it plugs into the API for Basecamp… and I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how powerful it gets after that.

I don’t like web apps because I’m not always with my browser open, and Klok, although I haven’t tried, doesn’t look much GTD friendly, because it looks more like you’re scheduling yourself at what time you’ll be doing things, and it never happens as planned. In short, I’m using JTTSlite , a opens source java application for all platforms, which is not perfect, but let me have the detail I want, shows cumulative time, has some nice graphics and good reports.

I could have 4-20 jobs that I touch every week, and we need to bill time out appropriately.

Along with Alana Post, I’m a huge fan of Klok. I don’t find myself using the minimize function very much, because I want to keep it full-size in a week-at-a-time view. This is the only time tracking app I’ve been able to find that actually lets you define which projects you’ve been working on visually instead of with a bunch of numbers. I’ll often get my Outlook calendar open on one monitor with Klok open on the other and take some time to sync them up. Plus, I can schedule blocks of project time for upcoming meetings, events, or vacation I’m already aware of.

The export to Excel is a simple drag-and-drop motion, and it’s actually a boss-ready report, completely understandable as-is. I have to enter my time into Peoplesoft, which uses the same project rows with day columns, so I’ll set up my time sheet with the projects in the same order as my Klok export. Fill in the grid identically, and I’ve got my weekly timesheet set – minimal thinking required.

Two things I wish Klok had (and I hope they’re listening):

1. The ability to sort the display order of projects, if only by project name.

2. A way to set a default day start time. Currently, the week view always starts days at 12am, so I have to scroll down a bit to get to my business day.
