I seldom use Twitter unless I get a twit alert. When I do, I end up being on there for a long time. I’ll have to try your idea and fit it in and be more proactive.

Nice list, if only I could be so disciplined ;)
To add on to your 3rd point: “5 Minutes: Promote, with Care”
I would say that in this respect it could be useful to create some Twitter content ahead of time – tips or info relevant to your field, so that you can copy and paste into Twitter in your 5 minutes, or even better, use a tool like Hootsuite to schedule these types of tweets in advance.

I’m sorry, but I got as far as the following line:

“RT @kellyecrane Great idea: PR consultants, let’s use the #soloprpro hashtag to share information! http://bit.ly/3wkIZu”

I couldn’t figure out what this meant. It’s filled with so many weird signs and urls and jargon.

I think your friends and colleagues aren’t worried so much about wasting time as they are intimidated by the fact that they would have to learn a new Twitter language.

Awesome article! I would say finding a good Twitter client helps me save time on Twitter. I use a combination of Mixero and Hootsuite-Mixero to monitor @replies, DMs, topics of interest, etc and Hootsuite to tweet relevant links I come across when I’m browsing the web. With Mixero, you can organize people into groups and set up “channels” for topics, which makes it easy to locate retweet-worthy content quickly.

Mixero’s still in private beta, but anyone who wants to try it out can try using the invitation code for readers of my blog, “usefultools.” There were 300 invites, not sure how many are left, but it’s worth a shot, at least.

Thanks for an excellent article. I have learned a thing or two here. I may want to add something that I also do. I use socialoomph to automate my tweets. This is especially useful when you want to promote products (or send inspirational quotes) over an extended period … by the minute, hour, days, weeks etc.

How do I keep my Twitter usage under control? I don’t. Haha. Great tips, though.
