I have pre work rituals. They are not time based. Sometimes it can take me 3-4 hours to be ready to produce real work, sometimes I can't wait to wake up and get right to work. My rituals tune my mind and get rid of my various anxieties. I've considered waking earlier but find it takes MORE time for me to get in the mindset for work. Also, I used to be a late night worker. I've spent at least 8 years trying to kill that habit because it's not good for me with my children's schedules etc.

I have to say that Aliza's comments made me utterly sad. Cringing when the baby wakes. Chomping (sic) at the bit to work while spending time with her husband.

Life first and work second. Babies and husbands and dogs and cats and friends first. Projects and emails second. Being present in life first. Champing at the bit to get to work, definitely second.

Perfect topic to read — just what I've been thinking about today. A run before work sounds like a great idea to me. In fact I've been shuffling my schedule around to find my most productive hours and tomorrow I will start working out in the morning, rather than at the end of my day.

Mandatory pre-work reading routine includes the BBC, People, and The Japan Times. ;-)

@Stuart: Whoa, you're a pretty early riser!

My ideal routine is waking up at 6 to run, bathe and have breakfast after that. Running helps keep me awake and make me mentally alert.

It's been weeks though since I last ran because of two things: utter laziness and because I've been sleeping late lately.

LOL, my entire pre word ritual is reading blogs that have nothing to do with my work and then I get to go to the office and read blogs that are related to work :)

As a point, I think everybody who works at home for a living should spend 10 minutes a morning walking outside. I get out everyday and "walk to work" by walking around the block. It may sound stupid but it helps prepare me for working at my job and stimulates my mind.

I don't think I have the luxury for a pre-work routine unless you count having breakfast with my husband (while chomping at the bit to get to work), diving into work the moment his truck leaves the driveway, then involuntarily cringing when the baby wakes. Then it is all about her, getting her fed, dressed, ready for daycare, taking her to daycare. At that point, even the drive home feels like wasted time to me. I sometimes pull into a wired cafe on the way to sit and dive back into work. My actual work time is from 10:30am to 4pm. Just not enough time in the day!
