I broke up with client -- gently and nicely, of course -- because I just didn't enjoy the work. We stay in touch. I had a bad feeling about another potential client, so I contacted the person who referred me to the prospect. Turns out he had trouble with the client -- so sometimes you can count on your gut.

I know people fear that dropping a client or passing up an opportunity means no money -- but think about how much more energy you will have in taking on TWO new clients that you enjoy working with? That'll surpass one no so great client.

Incredible! How apropos as I just had a conversation in which my supervisor seemed to give me 6 of the 8 clues, with no suggestions of how we can improve upon the current situation. Additionally, there is no personal development plan for the role nor does there appear to be one on the horizon. Spinning my wheels??? I would say so.

The single best piece of advice I ever got as a then-new consultant was "Remember; there will always be clients, and projects from clients, that you do NOT want. The hardest thing to learn is when and how to say 'No, thank you.'"

Especially true when we're at the bottom of a cycle and the tendency is to grab onto anything and everything we possibly can; we WILL get to a point where we can't do it all to our own satisfaction (or the client's); that will have repercussions later on.

Simple lessons, yes, but still worth pointing out every so often, just on general principles.

Great post, sometimes we're victims of our own creativity. This account and URL I'm posting with wasn't even our original product. However this software debugging seems to be more of our passion (your number 1 point). Hope everything works out.
