You don't have to unlock the iPhone to skip a track. During your run, while RunKeeper is logging, just doubleclick the home button to activate kind of a "minimal iPod overlay menu". There you can play/pause/skip tracks and adjust the volume (Again, this is without unlocking the iPhone). If you just want to adjust the volume, obviously the buttons on the side are easier to reach.
But even with this neat trick you have to take the iPhone out of the pocket to tab the correct icons. That's why I use an armband, no worries about falling iPhones... and the screen is easy to reach too.
I've never thought about taking an extra iPod with me. However, You definitely have a point here. Without the armband, I would probably grab my old Nano out of the drawer.

I have to admit that I also carry my older iPod with me when I run - even though I don't really need to carry it. I've had too many tangled headphone cord incidents that result in a dropped iPod, and I would rather break my iPod than my iPhone. I also like the tactile wheel interface where I can reach into my pocket to adjust volume or skip tracks without having to unlock my phone and look at it while I make simple adjustments.

@Steven. No need to take your iPod with you. On the iPhone, just start your favourite playlist before you open the RunKeeper app. This way your music will play during your run.

Cheers

Marcello

...and you're right, it is an awesome app indeed.
