With more than 30 years in the legal field, I have worked as a Virtual Assistant for nearly 10 years. While this situation is not ideal for everyone, I’ve found it works well for me. After years as a Night Owl in a Morning Person’s world, I enjoy the freedom this lifestyle offers. As with any job, you must tend to business. But I can tell you, living in an RV forces one to stay organized — always an advantage in my book.

Having tried this lifestyle out I will say that it is not ideal for everyone.
Basically, I found that moving around while working introduces all types
of inefficiencies, as opposed to working from a fixed location. I also think
it is not well suited for teamwork. And having to worry about work issues
takes away from the beauty of travel. I would recommend instead having
a fixed base for work, and then taking real vacations.

Come 2008, I am considering spending weeks at a time in various parts of the world to meet contacts, find new ideas and resources for my concierge service and getting fresh topics for my blog.

It’s one of the things we’re really, really strict about when it comes to the criteria for where we go…as far as we can we check it out beforehand – if all else fails, there’s always GPRS or the like via cellphone but that’s a pretty horrible & expensive way to connect with the laptops! Most places now have internet cafes so we’d just have to base ourselves there for the month in a real emergency!!

Eliza – glad you like Backpackit – there’s other services similar but Bacpackit is simple and it works for me so there’s no need to change.

Have you ever run into a situation where the high speed wasn’t as promised? We ran into serious problems on holiday a few weeks ago and could barely connect half the time. I can imagine that has to be a real concern for you!
