I’m South African living in Sydney and I have a bias towards Africa. Over the past 5, 10 years people are developing and have deleveloped programmes to support Africa. From combatting malaria, to providing work, to assisting with AIDS … I still ahev not decided how to help Africa yet but I will

Thanks to major investments like RED and all the people who are helping and aiding people above … I am hoping that Africa becomes an economic lion and uses their infinite resources and the incredible nature and personality of the people and their ability to work so hard …well I support http://www.rehoboth.org.za/ who believe that “it takes a whole village to raise a child’
I also love FreeRice.

Africa is strong and vital they will flourish (I would give my yearly salary for every child dying of AIDS)

Hi Emil.

During my research, I found out that web working really seems to be taking off in South Africa.

I agree that the OLPC laptops should be made in Africa. Jonathan Gosier made the same point and I’m sure the OLPC people have heard it. I hope they do something about it.

Slavery and colonialism were among the things I had in mind when I said “criminally exploited.” It’s past time for the world to do the right thing.

Thank you for this post! I work for an organization called Millennium Promise and we are working in many of the areas you described above. One of our initiatives, the Millennium Villages project, uses a holistic, integrated and community-led approach to help rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa lift themselves out of extreme poverty. We provide tools and resources for interventions in agriculture, education, health and infrastructure – and we do it all at once, with the community leading and managing all of the projects. Currently, the project reaches 80 villages in 10 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Sometimes the solution can be low-tech, too. We're currently working with NetsforLife (www.netsforlifeafrica.org), a partnership program that works to prevent, recognize and treat malaria in Africa. They've found that one of the best ways to combat poverty is to reach the rural poor and prevent malaria. A simple insecticide-treated bed net can prevent this deadly disease from sapping $12 billion in lost productivity from Africa.

Thanks for your Blog Action Day post with regard to development initiatives in Africa. I’ve been following AppAfrica and the OLPC movement; what’s especially encouraging to me is that people are invested in and pursuing solutions revolving around partnerships. I think the potential impact of public and private institutions working together is great.

Hi, I am from South Africa. This is a very good post. Would it not be even more beneficial if the One Laptop Per Child were actually build in Africa, creating some extra jobs?

“When it comes to web working, Africa is one of the last frontiers” – so true, but when it involved slavery and colonialism …. ?
