There are a couple of fantastic reference site which have just been launched which concentrate on modern web development techniques. There is no need to worry about accidentally using old fashioned code, as can often be the case with online resources. Opera have just launched the Opera Web Standards Curriculum which is a great resource for anybody who want to study standards based web design. It currently covers HTML and CSS and more articles to cover JavaScript are in the pipeline. With more of a reference structure than a course structure, the SitePoint Reference is a very comprehensive set of resources. Again, a JavaScript section will soon be added.
