10 Things to Do Before the New Year
Whether you work for someone or yourself, things tend to slow down for many of us in the final two weeks of the old year. What better time to do a little business sprucing? Here are ten things to do before the New Year to feel invigorated and ready to whatever comes your way.
- Plan for a successful New Year. Do a review of your work and see how you can make the next year a better one.
- Clean your email box. Challenge yourself to reach inbox zero, or if you have thousands of messages, shoot for half. Delete newsletters, unsubscribe to newsletters you never read, file emails that require no further action on your part and address those that do. Don’t put it off. Make it a goal to complete the to-do emails by December 31.
- File papers. Not all of us have every bill, invoice and paperwork in electronic format. It’s easier to file paperwork on an as-you-go basis rather than let them pile up. I have folders for bank statements, credit card statements, business contracts and printed pay stubs. If you receive any other paperwork on a regular basis, create a folder. You may need folders for items related to health benefits, stocks and retirement.
- Update your resume and bio. It helps to update these on a regular basis as you take on more challenging projects or work with new clients. It’s easy to let these slip that when someone asks for a resume or bio, we scramble to provide an updated one. Do it now while you’re not rushed. It also helps to have a short, medium and long version of your bio. While you’re at it, review your LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and other social media profiles to ensure they’re up to date.
- Organize your workstation. Take a look at your work area and see if there are improvements you can make. You may already have a great office set up, but it never hurts to make sure it’s optimal.
- Clean your computer(s). Cleaning includes both the inside and outside of your computer. Thursday gave some tips on how to clean the outside of your laptop and Simon addressed the cleaning the inside.
- Take care of administrative tasks. The tasks depend on whether you have your own business or work for someone else. For those who do the invoicing, take a look at your accounts receivables to make sure all of your invoices have been paid and take care of those that have not. You may also need to collect 1099s and W-2 forms.
- Review your address book. Consolidate your contacts, back them up and archive old contactd. Verify you have contact information that you need and put those business cards into your address book.
- Review your social media strategy. Whether you blog, tweet or update your statuses in Facebook and LinkedIn, having a plan in place ensures you remember to provide value to others rather than focus on you. Your plan doesn’t have to be formal; just one that gives you direction to keep you on track. Also, think about how much time you spend in social media, which is more about return on relationships than direct ROI. This might be a good time to review Aliza’s 10 Golden Rules of Social Media.
- Assess your marketing strategy. What’s working? What’s not working? How do you land new business or projects? You may need to up your marketing activities in one area and drop them in another.
Think about how great you’ll feel when you return to work after the New Year more organized and ready to take charge.

These are great!
“Clean your email box” – that’s the one I need to get a handle on, it’s out of control. North Coast Muse @ http://sally1029.wordpress.com
Thanks for the refresher!! I love this 10 tips to start 2010 off with a clear mind and organized life so that you can truly have a clear mind to acheive all your goals in the upcoming year! Thx!
thats the key a clear mind . a clear mind is mostlikely a focused mind on to success in the new year
I found 8052 e.mails in my archives so as it’s a slow day I started replying to the oldest ones. Should generate some interesting responses.
and I just deleted 8043 of the 8050 old e.mails. Man do I feel better already.
Way to go, Rusty! Amazing how a little email clean up can make you feel better.
#2 is the first thing on my agenda :)
Makes me glad I’m retired! Even so, 2. Clean your email box, 3. File papers, 6. Clean your computer(s), and 8. Review your address book still apply to everyone who uses a computer.
a pretty good start on being organized for the new year!!
While I’m not currently working, all your suggestions can be applied to my non-working life, too. Every year I start out the year with the idea I will get organized and each year I make a little more progress. I’m hoping 2010 is the year I finally succeed in making my life balanced. Nice blog. Cheers!
Cleaning my computer sounds like a good idea. I guess I should do that at least once a year. haha
I’ve been doing most of the things on this list the last few days or so!! But I think #1 requires to much thinking at this point! Maybe January 4th! :)
Good advice. Now I just may get done with it all by NEXT January :-)
Hey, this is pretty cool! I’m a college student, so obviously some minor tweaking is involved…but all in all, here’s some advice that everybody should follow!
Great list. Although I must say that thinking about getting these all done by the new year is a bit stressing. So to stay with the spirit of this post, I’m going to pick 5 that I can do. In order:
1. Plan for a successful new year.
2. Clean my email inbox.
3. File my papers.
4. Organize your workstation.
5. Look for ways to get reoccurring income. (my own, but a good one)
Jake, great idea. I had hoped to publish this sooner, but I needed to get another article done before this one went out… then Christmas arrived and pushed it out further. So your suggestion to pick a few things is the way to go. Perhaps, make it a goal to do it all by Jan 31.
Great advice! I also recommend cleaning out any “junk/catch-all” drawers you have and your work area. This is a must for me so I can fill them back up through the new year. :)
Good reminders!
a good time for stress review as well – don’t sweat the same stuff over again, look at what bothered you from the year before, and decide if you’ll let the same things bug you again, worth worrying about.

Great Article !!
Thanks for the blog – there are some great ideas here!
On a personal note I’m trying to be healthier in the new year, and for anyone wanting to join me why not try my recipe for fabulously fresh tomato soup – nutritious and delicious too!
Happy New Year

Besides already working on many of the items in the excellent list provided, I’m also assessing all strategies, not just our/my social media and marketing strategies. Additionally, I’m doing the following:
*Setting my personal and professional goals for 2010.
*Going through my computer files and doing some cleaning and organizing.
*Setting up those apps that just never got put to full use during ’09.
*Reviewing 2009 and seeing how that will impact 2010 goals.
Thanks for the great list! Looking forward to another great year from WWD.
I will not to plan for cleaning my mail box. There’s too much important thing and must keep it. But gmail just over limited quota.
Social media story is my priority to get best plan. It more help me to build network than SEO (I’m not good boy to use it)
