Green energy is definitely the best solution in most cases. Technology like solar energy, wind power, fuel cells, zaps electric vehicles, EV hybrids, etc have come so far recently. Green energy even costs way less than oil and gas in many cases.

The subject of a carbon foot print RATING, regarding GREEN upholstered furniture is in degrees.
My conclusion is that the least carbon producing furniture would be a large ROCK. The only energy used would be the delivery.

From their, Reupholstering a existing piece of furniture , a friends ,relatives, Second hand stores like salvation army store ,free-cycle
upholsterers have unclaimed pieces, Craigs free stuff list , or a Consignment stores. would use the next least amount of resources.

RECYCLE by Reupholstering your sofa, chair in natural padding rubber cushions ,cotton ,jute webbing, (no oil products) your old frame is made from solid wood. better than new furniture which contains a large percent % oil products and some are using plywood's and particle boards which are contain large amount of glues. Use natural ,green recycled fabric . cork fabric or many types of natural cottons . You can give any piece a make over by style and trim changes or even a slipcover look and You will be able to hand furniture down several generations. Remember that the style can be easily changed.

I also build frames with certified wood, but that would still require the cutting down of a small certified living tree. reclaimed wood would be an option
Even with Low VOC glues, and all the above natural materials be used, This will use about the same amount of resources to build accept they will be natural .

So if the goal is to use minimal resources AND achieving the same outcome then, REUPHOLSTER,RECYCLE,
RESCUE AND REDESIGN .
The final EFFECT WILL SAVE SEVERAL HUNDRED POUNDS OF FURNITURE ,from the dump.

The New Yorker, with its long articles, is still something I read on dead trees. And that way I can cut out the cartoons too!
