Great info. I think the use of frp would help in construction of cooling towers. Fiberglass reinforced plastics products are essential in a good construction. When working on a building project, an frp is a great option to look into. Whatever decision you make, it is important to do your research beforehand. McGraw Hill's Sweets Directory is an invaluable resource because it has all of the information you need in one place. While I do work for them, I have honestly never seen a better tool to help with a construction project. I really like the CAD details you can download from their site. You should take advantage of their expertise.

Very interesting article. But in the entire 48 page report, the word "filter" is only mentioned twice, yet this is one of the most effective ways to keep cooling towers and irrigation systems operating at highest efficiency. Preventing the accumulation of dirt, scale, and other solids is far less expensive and more effective than replacing components after the harm has been done. Clogged irrigation nozzles means more water must be pumped to properly irrigate a given area. And proper filtration makes chemical and non-chemical water treatment more effective, since both work much better with clean water.

And the energy savings related to proper filtration can be even greater than the water savings.

oops. The lead-in is way understated. Buildings (and industry) account for a whopping 65% of fresh water use in the United States. Add thermoelectric power plants using 49% of the water and industry using 4%. Two conclusions:
1. Not much industry left in the U.S.
2. Want to make a big dent in water waste, cut energy use!

Hi Orion242,

Thanks for your comment. I double-checked the report and it does say 1,000 tons of refrigeration would use 3,000 gallons of water per minute (or 3 gallons/minute/ton) See pg 30 of the free report if you're interested. So if you're correct, than the report is wrong. I'll follow-up with BD+C and see if I can get a comment.

Best, Justin

A large commercial building with 1,000 tons of refrigeration will use 3,000 gallons of water per minutes, the report says.

Better double check that number. 3,000 gallons of water in their cooling tower per minute??? This must be a typo. Typical usage is closer to 1.5 - 2.8 gallons/hr per ton.
