It was said that the device could be installed in homes, generating both electricity and heat, which would result in big efficiency gains. Commenters on Reddit point out that the real savings may lie in avoiding transmission and maintenance costs with a machine that’s much simpler to handle than a full fledged power plant. Although the boxes cost a lot (up to $800K), the amount of power they allegedly put out more than makes up for it.

Is this the future? http://bit.ly/9uG6Is

Good! Competition breeds lower cost. If we can get 2 or 3 companies in the US building similar equipment they will have to improve their systems and keep the price low to sell the product. If it is from another country then we would still have to keep cost and quality high. I can see this product being used in large apartment buildings. Would it mount on the roof and use solar or would it have to be in the basement? How about college dorms and class buildings? How about federal buildings so they can be "energy independent" in case of an attack on the grid. Those sources using the product first would bring down the cost for home use.

A simple solution is often not well received by society it seems. Centralization may place an additional burden off of an individual's back, but at the cost of efficiency and future protection. Imagine the difficulties of maintaining one entire power line, making sure the wires are up, installed correctly, properly entering every home, etc. Now imagine thousands upon thousands criss-crossing the entire country. By mass-distributing these boxes, they can switch from maintaining each individual line that powers 10 homes, to sending out maintenance teams to each individual box that malfunctions, at excellent profit margins by reducing the actual cost of producing energy. You are right in saying there should be a balance, but a national power grid is far from balanced.

It does not NEED any petroleum input, that fuel source is just an OPTION among the various methods that could be used to power the fuel cell. Of course, in time this will become an "old station wagon", but that station wagon was a step towards the Prius. Every alternative upgrade is merely a step until we have reached a goal, and a cheap fuel cell powered by cheap metal alloys, along with sand? Unimaginable. Today, the hydrogen fuel cell is the station wagon to the Bloom Box, thus is the food chain of technology. Also, imagine trying to produce cheap cars with one factory. Ford managed to beat out his competitors in price by owning hundred of factories, each capable of pushing a new Model-T in little over 10 seconds. Should the box ever be well received by major power companies, well over $100 thousand dollars seems in reach ($3-5000 dollars does seem quite.. irrational)

@Tom,

Actually, the purpose of the solar would be akin to the gases being used. They are used to separate the hydrogen from the oxygen in H2O, for details, wikipedia. To do this, the water molecules must pass through an electric current, which solar energy could provide.

The key is in the type of fuel source used. By using land-fill gas, it becomes a carbon-neutral energy generator, producing just as much carbon as would've come out had that gas been exposed to the climate. It also has the potential to use solar energy, which would render it carbon-free.

From the very first view I had tried to keep my word to myself. Finally and because no one have mentions.
There are some notiona we should take into account:

(1) Be aware of marketing work, such as "someday . . .", "it could. . .", "its capability . . . .", etc... This should bring us back when the Silicon "BIG GUNS" fanned out the "IT" (Personal scooter).

(2) As always, The devil is in the "fine prints" the fine, very fine print of this whole thing is "OFF- GRID" -- WHY ??? The big "W-H-Y" here.

(3) No wonder that Ebay, Google use for only 15% (????) not for 60% or 100%. (why?)

(4) Another fine print put their reputation on the line it is "no emission". - One word of misleading act puts all other words in same category.

(5) It's easy, that we can differentiate what they want us to believe and what they are actually say (to retract later?).
