Broadband is not needed for smart grid. There is just no need for moving more than a few bytes an hour per home. For that matter I'm not convinced that there is an urgent the need for two way. Old fashioned one way pagers should get us 90% of the way there. The other problem with these broadband solutions is the lack of universality. Only about 50% of Americans have broadband and a hodgepodge of heterogeneous networks will just not get the job done. The utilities need to build their own very low speed networks.
