This week, the Senate begins in earnest the slog to produce its own version of the legislation with a set of hearings that will help shape key, controversial issues in the draft — including the role of agriculture in offsetting carbon emissions and producing alternative fuels, how to control emissions while competing in a global economy and how to manage international trade.

Nary a mention here of the environmental opposition to Waxman-Markey. Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, Progressive Democrats of America, Public Citizen, The Clean Campaign, WeACT for Environmental Justice, and many others opposed the bill. Reps. Kucinich, DeFazio, and Stark voted no because the bill isn't nearly good enough. See http://www.pricecarbon.org.

The bill gutted the earlier version of Renewable Energy Standards, replacing them with a business-as-usual level. The weak cap is further weaked by two billion tons of difficult-to-verify offsets, and trading in allowances (estimated to grow into a $2 trillion market) combined with bogus offsets set the stage for another financial bubble.

Need more? The bill funds speculative "clean coal" technology-- why not cheaper, cleaner already-available wind and solar?

The question now is whether the Senate (and the President) just want to pass a hollowed out bill, or whether they want to do something about the climate crisis.

A revenue-neutral carbon tax could drive emissions reductions effectively, fairly and quickly without the gaming and bureaucracy. More at http://www.carbontax.org.
