Yes, iPad and other multi purpose portable devices (e.g. cell phones and laptops) will kill the market for any dedicated energy management only devices.

I’ve never really considered buying an iPad because it wouldn’t really serve any purpose to me other than perhaps easy browsing of the internet while in the garden or around the house (tasks a laptop doesn’t struggle to complete). But with the energy management tools I can really see myself getting one in the future.
