There also needs to be accounting for the turnover of the handsets, as they are frequently changed and when was the last time you considered buying a recycled mobile phone? Never, and it's not likely to happen either. The old landline phone in our home is at least 20 years old. Sure it's using more electricity when running, but it only had to be manufactured, transported, and sold once.

I agree Katie. While a lot of the discussion around smart grid focuses on smart meters, or lately the residential interfaces (basically the baseline upgrades needed to move beyond the old way of collecting usage data), the key to smart grid is M2M networks that converge data from the various devices and systems located (or soon to be located) throughout the distribution infrastructure. Dynamic monitoring and automation will come about about through M2M, not before M2M.

Thanks Jaymi, I think where we differ is that I do not see mobile technology as the little sister of bigger tech shifts like the smart grid. Mobile technology is the underlying technology that will enable something like a smart grid.

Great points. I see this application of mobile technology as the little sister to the bigger tech shifts the report mentions (smart grids, intelligent cities...) that will need to be put in place before we can see such savings. Check out http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/07/could-mobile-technology-save-europe-billions.php for a different perspective on the report.
