You are quite right that using the stack emissions is more complicated in practice than on paper. Everybody is talking about it - very few people have proven out the feasibility. There are a handful of publications in the scientific literature, and the Israeli company Seambiotic has reportedly been growing their algae on flue gases for many years. Many algae definitely grow significantly faster when they are provided with 5 to 10x higher CO2 concentrations than in the atmosphere. Remember that CO2 is a nutrient for photosynthetic organisms. Atmospheric CO2 is like being on a diet. Also, high CO2 concentrations prevent competing reactions that reduce the efficiency of photosynthesis. Nevertheless, algal biofuels is very much an R&D proposition at the moment. There are a ton of problems associated with every approach, and it's going to take a bit of sweat and some tears to put the whole deal together. If somebody tries to sell you stock keep your money in your pocket, and don't expect to be filling your tank with algal biodiesel next year! Let's talk in 3 to 5...

[...] Here’s the rub of algae fuels: algae absorbs CO2 as it grows, and this CO2 can come from, say, power plant emissions, thus providing a productive way of recycling the carbon emissions. But when algae fuel is burned in … Solazyme says that “from field-to-wheels,” Solazyme’s “Soladiesel” is “85 to 93 percent lower than standard petroleum based ultra-low sulfur diesel” and has “a significantly lower carbon footprint than any currently available first-generation biofuels. … See the rest here: How Good Is Algae Fuel At Fighting Climate Change?

Sure, algae CAN be grown synergistically with fossil fuel fired power plants, but has anyone shown anything close to a practical way to 'feed' the hot toxic stack emissions from a power plant to any kind of algal bioreactor system? Seems like that step is probably not as simple as it might seem, for example, possibly low exchange rates and present of algal toxins? Everybody seems to be talking about this kind of algal fuel setup, but is there anything really known about it? Does it make any difference if the algae get their CO2 from the air around the power plant, as opposed to right from the stacks themselves? CO2 removal from the atmosphere is pretty fungible, isn't it?? Doesn't make any difference where you get it, does it? Maybe it's more concentrated in the stack emissions, but I'm not sure that would necessarily translate to a better algal yield?

People are missing the big picture here. Even if the OIL obtained from algae cultivation were free and abundant - it still floats on this planet's water bodies just like an Exxon Valdez Oil Spill did and still does.

The root cause of global warming is the uncombusted emissions of oil which phase separate into this planet's water laden atmosphere. We see and breathe this as brown urban smog.

It takes an oxygen atom derived from water to convert these bio-oils or even fossil oils into water soluble, biodegradable alcohols. One atom per molecule here is really missing in the algae formula.
