Piedmont EMC, an electric coop headquartered in
Hillsborough, NC is currently offering daily electric use information on the web to our 31,000 customers using a fully deployed Hunt Technology two way AMI system and Exceleron web software marketed as MyUsage.com. The system was made active last week and will be announced to the customers next week through our monthly newsletter. We feel this system will help our customers make more informed electricity purchasing decisions. The next step is to link the smart meter, equipped with an radio sender, to a in-house radio receiving monitor/controller This monitor/controller would give the consumer real-time electric energy consumption and pricing information and could automatically control radio linked appliances and thermostats.

[...] Google’s Tom Sly previously told us that the search engine giant would be launching its tools for both utilities and straight to the consumer this year. So expect a consumer version coming sometime soon. Sly told us that Google is working with device manufacturers to produce something that can mimic a smart meter to work with PowerMeter and give the consumer enough data to help them modify their behavior. That could be where a company like Tendril, or WattVision comes in. GA_googleFillSlot("earth2tech_ros_post_footer"); [...]

It is very difficult to get Google to show any interest in working with a device manufacturer inspite of their insistence that they are interested. Possibly they are not there yet organizationally and therefore are unable to handle queries and requests... Their website is lacking in all areas. Possibly this is more vaporware -- no SDK or developer packages for integrating our products with theirs. Our take: this is an attempt to see how much interest there is out there but not necessarily will they follow through if the interest levels are not sufficient to justify their business model.
