John Chambers, CEO of Cisco:
Influence: Chambers has been leading Internet networking company Cisco into selling networking gear for the smart grid.
If the smart grid is a recreation of the Internet for the power grid, Cisco, which provides much of the hardware for routing Internet data, could clearly have a huge influence. Cisco execs have even been quoted as saying that the market opportunity for the smart grid is bigger than that of the Internet. While Cisco moved slowly at first into the smart grid market, focusing mostly on the consumer portion of the network, it has more recently become more aggressive and competitive, winning over business with large utilities like Duke Energy.
