It definitely seems clear that many utilities have a great deal of work ahead of them as you’ve suggested. The advice that better customer relations and transparency can only help utilities struggling to explain Smart Grid to their millions of customers makes a lot of sense.

However, it’s not clear if all utilities fully understand the new customer services challenges of the Smart Grid world. In fact, a new industry report has suggested many utilities are quite unprepared to manage the increases in call volume and electronic interaction from energy consumers. You can download the report here: http://ow.ly/19XGc. It seems that if utilities don’t increase both their technical information infrastructure and their customer service capabilities, there could be quite a few unhappy homeowners listening to a lot of elevator music while on hold in the future.
