HP put rumors to bed with the official announcement of both HP webOS 2.0 and the Palm Pre 2. The evolution of the platform and handsets designed for it are the result of HP's acquisition of Palm earlier this year for $1.2 billion.

HP put rumors to bed with the official announcement of both HP webOS 2.0 and the Palm Pre 2. The evolution of the platform and handsets designed for it are the result of HP’s acquisition of Palm earlier this year for $1.2 billion. The announcement raises questions about future branding, with webOS now garnering the HP brand (HP webOS 2.0) but the handset retaining the Palm moniker. The Palm Pre 2 will launch Friday in France, and will be coming to Verizon in the U. S. in a few months.

The webOS platform is getting some serious updates in functionality, notably a new UI better optimized for handling multitasking (dubbed Stacks) and Exhibition which provides a vehicle for developers to build apps designed to run when the phone is on the Touchstone wireless charger. Version 2.0 of webOS also gains Adobe Flash 10.1 support for viewing web content.

The Palm Pre 2 is the third generation of the handset line that started the webOS movement. It is more streamlined than previous versions, but is largely unchanged. Sales of the Palm Pre and Pre Plus didn’t set the world on fire, and it’s not clear why HP believes a simple refresh will sell better. Those who follow the smartphone space have been waiting to see what changes to the Palm line HP would bring to the market, and this isn’t much different. HP must be counting on other webOS products to build the platform, but the Pre 2 may be a missed opportunity for the company in the highly competitive smartphone space.

There's a rumor bouncing around the web today that the upcoming HP "PalmPad" will be a webOS tablet operated by both touch and a pen.

There’s a rumor bouncing around the web today that the upcoming HP “PalmPad” will be a webOS tablet that works with both touch and a Wacom pen. As a long-time tablet enthusiast I would love to see such a slate come to market but I’m afraid that just won’t happen.

Someone recently discovered that HP has trademarked the name PalmPad, and the logical assumption is that the company’s forthcoming slate running webOS is the reason for the trademark. The very idea of a webOS slate is quite exciting, and the company has hinted one is forthcoming.

However, putting a dual digitizer in such a tablet — and that is what would be required to allow both pen input and touch operation — is not very likely for a number of reasons. The cost of such a dual input system would be quite high (active digitizers with pens can add a hundred bucks), and the PalmPad is going to have to hit the market at a reasonable price to have a shot at success. Also, webOS wasn’t written to work with a pen, especially for using handwriting on the screen for data input. This is a big development effort, and there is no way that Palm has gotten this ready for the market; there’s no indication Palm’s even been working on it. Pen input is thus not an option for a tablet appearing later this year.

I am such a geek, and if I let myself dream about a wonderful package for some great technology, a slate with a dual digitizer would be a perfect fit for the Windows 7-based HP Slate. That tablet was first shown in January of this year, and then later said to have been cancelled by HP. I’d love to see the HP Slate with pen input; but then I’d love to see the PalmPad with webOS, too. I guess I’m just a hopeless romantic when it comes to tablets. Or how about a dual-booting slate with both of these tablets merged into one? Pinch me to make sure I’m awake.

HP has closed on the $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm. With that the honeymoon phase is over and time to get down to business. Mobile market has a small window of opportunity and HP needs to capitalize on by launching new WebOS devices -- fast.

HP has closed on the $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm, and this substantial investment means it’s time to get down to business. Here’s what HP needs to do to make its Palm buy a success.

The top item on the HP post-merger agenda involves sending a clear message to Palm’s webOS developers that states its full commitment to the platform. The development community is bound to feel some uncertainty over HP’s intentions with webOS, and the company would do well to assuage those fears. HP could do so by being clear in its intentions and communications. The recent move by Palm to waive the $50 application fee for developers, even retroactively, is a good first step.

With its vast resources, HP can ramp up this development effort better than Palm could by itself. Hosting some app competitions that throw a few million dollars at top applicants could get some good coding happening quickly. HP should focus on getting both smartphone and tablet apps, as each device has a different usage scenario.

The tablet space is hot due to the success of the iPad, and HP has indicated it has plans for webOS in this area. Producing a webOS tablet should be a priority of HP, to help the company compete with the iPad and make its personal computing business more mobile. We will see a flood of tablets running Android hit the market late this year, and HP could certainly compete with them. The webOS system is a good fit for touch tablet operation, better than Android, and HP should prove that with its first effort. With Palm, HP is able to do so without input from Intel or Microsoft.

HP tc1100

Tablets have only recently gotten a lot of attention, but HP has been making them for nearly a decade. The HP-produced tc1000 slate computer was the precursor for the iPad, so HP knows how to build these things. The key now is timing — HP needs to beat the big Android tablets to market. Get a solid webOS tablet to market with the HP branding, and it will have a big impact on this space.

The smartphone area is going to be important for HP going forward. Palm created a good platform in webOS, but was hampered by hardware regarded as worse than the competition. HP has a long history of producing great phone hardware — previously on the Windows Mobile platform — and this expertise needs to be leveraged to take advantage of the strengths of webOS. Big screens and state-of-the-art hardware components can be coupled with webOS to make phones that are competitive with both the iPhone and Android.

HP needs to be tightly focused on these areas to make an effective run with Palm, and the company needs to act quickly. The mobile space has a very short product cycle, and HP must be prepared to meet that head-on. Companies that plan 18 months to two years ahead in the mobile space often miss the window of opportunity. Look no further than Redmond to see that truth.

The impending merger between HP and Palm have many looking to the future of the platform of webOS. Palm has been floundering for a long time and the hope from enthusiasts is that HP will leverage its vast resources to launch the webOS platform into a new beginning. Those willing to take on some risk will find that opportunities exist with the new webOS, and those opportunities are quite big.

HP’s new venture with webOS crosses two of the hottest segments in mobile devices — smartphones and tablets. The company has indicated it will be leveraging webOS in both of those categories, so the stage is set for an interesting ride. Developers of webOS apps would be wise to get talking to HP as soon as the merger is finalized later this year. One thing is clear — webOS is a very competitive platform for smartphones, and will be the same for the newly emerging tablet space. HP’s vast resources help set the stage for a very profitable run in both spaces, and developers have some outstanding opportunities.

These opportunities cross a number of areas in the mobile space, and I took a deep dive look at those (sub. req’d). There is a decent potential for reward in both of the mobile areas mentioned, and even the big printer business will get into play. The time is ripe for webOS to assume the legacy that good technology can create.

I gave up my Palm Pre a week ago when I upgraded to the HTC EVO 4G. I’m not regretting that move but I admit I miss the Pre. The forced withdrawal from the webOS platform has me nostalgic for the user interface on the Pre; I think webOS is the best interface on smartphones. The impending merger of Palm with HP is no doubt a good thing as HP has made it clear it has big plans for webOS. I expect we’ll see tablets and other devices running the OS before long. The webOS platform has lagged behind Android and others due to the lack of available apps; that’s the primary problem I had with the Pre. Palm has been working hard with app developers to get them producing apps for the platform, but a big question looms — what will happen after the merger?

Palm has enjoyed a long-time relationship with developers; some would call them fanatical about the company. Yet the number of developers making apps for webOS has not produced a high volume of apps to date, even with many pulling for Palm to succeed. The merger with HP is exactly what Palm needed to survive, yet is bound to impact the effort by developers producing apps for the platform.

Even if HP makes a big effort to keep developers working with webOS, there will be uncertainty about the permanence of such an effort. HP does many things, and the webOS work will be just a tiny piece of its efforts. Who knows how long it would continue? Developers must be thinking about that already.

What if HP decides to take on the advancement of webOS itself? It may not care if developers build apps for webOS or not. That’s not as far-fetched as it may sound — the company’s first Linux netbooks had internally developed interface shells that controlled the user experience. It even prevented access to Linux by users. HP could take the same tack with webOS to simply produce its own gadgets totally “by HP.” In that scenario webOS app development wouldn’t be desired, much less pursued by the company.

One thing is certain — webOS developers must be as concerned as can be about the future of the platform for non-HP developers. That alone may cause some to jump to another platform. They must go where the potential money is.

ZumoDrive for iPhone, Android and webOS all get an upgrade today. New features make it easier to share files and media with friends directly from a handset and the music streaming appears faster too.

Just yesterday, Mint for Android gained parity with its iPhone software counterpart and today it’s ZumoDrive, the cloud service for storing and syncing files across multiple devices. And the ZumoDrive improvements don’t apply to Android only — the webOS and iPhone versions gain a few new tricks as well. Most impressive to me is the speed at which the Android and webOS versions gained the same functions as the iPhone version since the initial ZumoDrive software for those platforms just launched in March.

I nabbed an early build for Android very late last night, so I haven’t had too much hands-on time yet. Here’s a rundown of what you can expect:

Ability to upload pictures & videos on iPhone, Android, Palm devices

Ability to download files to iPhone, Android, Palm devices

Ability to share content directly from iPhone, Android, Palm devices

Improved media streaming on Android and Palm devices

Password protection to lock the iPhone app

I easily uploaded a picture to my ZumoDrive account in the cloud from the existing photo library of my Google Nexus One. And of course, since I’m constantly listening to music, I fired up the music streaming feature. I already have a few MP3 albums stored on ZumoDrive and I’ve used this function in the past. This time around, the music began playing noticeably faster than I recall. I also saw a way to upload files from anywhere on my phone’s SD card, but found that it required another free app — a type of file explorer — and I simply didn’t have time to grab that software. I’ll do that later today though because I want the ability to move any file of my choosing from my handset to the cloud.

The ZumoDrive software is freely available in the app stores for each respective phone, but of course, you’ll need a ZumoDrive account to make the mobile magic work. ZumoDrive plans start at $2.99 per month for 10 GB of storage, but a free 1 GB is available for all. I highly recommend considering ZumoDrive — or another similar service if you prefer — for mobile file synchronization between the web, computer and smartphone. This type of functionality is priceless when you’re on the run.

The tech world was taken by surprise by the news that computer giant HP has initiated a purchase of beleaguered Palm for $1.2 billion.

The tech world was taken by surprise by the news that computer giant HP had initiated a purchase of beleaguered Palm for $1.2 billion. Palm has been in trouble for a while, and had been actively shopping for a buyer to bail them out. A few companies had been mentioned in the press as interested in Palm, but no one gave HP a thought. The merger of HP and Palm is probably the best possible scenario for Palm, and it will be fun to watch the process. HP has the resources to make the most of Palm’s technology, and experience at taking over innovative companies (remember Compaq?). Here’s what I think will happen with the merger, along with my thoughts on what better happen to make this work.

HP is in a unique position to take advantage of the Palm takeover. It is in the phone business, but not really. HP was big in the PDA segment for years, but never made a successful transition into the smartphone age. There are good people in this area with HP, but they’ve never been allowed to innovate. The absorption of Palm into the HP Personal Systems Group will be an infusion of talent and know-how that HP can leverage immediately.

That is first and foremost what the new HP/Palm team must do — release a new webOS phone that blows Palm’s past phones out of the water. Take HP’s great skill at producing top-notch hardware, and pair it with webOS to make a smartphone that will take the segment by storm. I have no doubt it can be done, and it must be done quickly to create the buzz needed to make people watch HP’s phones going forward. Make a webOS phone with hardware that rivals anything in the Android segment. Prove that webOS, coupled with outstanding hardware, is the best smartphone platform available.

HP must focus on the Palm/webOS effort in its phone business after the merger is complete. Drop Windows Phone 7 and work solely with webOS; no dilution of effort in the phone business. Palm’s OS is as good as anything on the market, so take it and run with it. Continue to innovate and grow the OS with the help of the Palm team. Send a clear message to the smartphone community and market that this is your product.

Throw a lot of resources into the Palm developer community. This is crucial to the success of the platform, and HP has the muscle and money to make it a vital part of the equation. Get developers to embrace the platform, no matter what it takes. Bring back those developers who have dropped webOS due to Palm’s problems. Make this a priority within HP and the phone group. Throw a boatload of money at developers if you must, it is crucial to the future of the platform.

Drop the Palm brand. This is not something I say lightly, I am nostalgic about Palm and the brand. But I believe it is vital that HP send a clear message to the industry that it is behind the webOS platform 100%. A clear way to do that is to bring it into the HP branding scheme, and quickly. Go all in with Palm by bringing it totally into the HP family. On every front it is important to send a clear message — Palm is HP now, and we are going to run with it.

Produce a webOS tablet that rivals the iPad. I firmly believe the webOS platform is a good one for such a product, and HP’s expertise in making mobile computers can be leveraged to full advantage in such a device. This will create a new product line that has amazing potential for HP, and all of the pieces are already in place with the merger to make this happen. HP can still go with the HP Slate, although that is just a netbook without a keyboard. What will be better is a thinner, lighter tablet with a mobile OS. That will truly compete with the iPad.

An HP tablet with webOS opens up the possibility for an ecosystem that can take on the Apple/iTunes/App Store. HP has the clout and expertise to use the webOS phone and slate lines to add apps, music and video to the mix in such a way that eventually HP can take on Cupertino.

The merger of Palm and HP will not be without cost cutting, and that means losing good people. It is inevitable given the high price paid for Palm. HP must do this intelligently, and without hampering the Palm team too severely. Make the combined team work well together after the merger. The priority should be fast release of new products that make a difference.

Poor Palm — the news coming out of the company just gets worse and worse. Lackluster sales of its webOS handsets and a mass exodus the departure of some key executives at the company. It’s like rats leaving a sinking ship in droves. Analysts are quick to point out what Palm has done wrong to put itself in this untenable position, but the fact remains that the way forward is anything but clear. Is it time for Palm to call it quits?

Sales of the Palm Pre and then the Pixi never set Sprint sales records. Palm then put big hopes on the updated Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, with its exclusive deal in the U.S. with Verizon. But in the quick paced smartphone space timing is everything, and Palm’s appearance on the Big Red network followed the carrier’s move into the hot Android market. The Verizon advertising campaign for the Droid Android line was massive, and the Palm phones arrived at Big Red with a whimper, not a bang.

The sales numbers for Palm get worse and worse; it’s clear the webOS platform is not saving the company as hoped. The company goes public that it is shopping for a buyer, and key executives are leaving by the shuttle bus load have left. Palm offers big bonuses to keep other executives from leaving the sinking ship, but that’s not enough either. The loss of a major distributor for Palm phones (RadioShack) proves how bad it is, and signals that it is only going to get worse. Palm is even waiving the developer’s $99 fee to submit webOS apps to the App Catalog, a move that smells of “too little too late”. There doesn’t seem to be a way forward for Palm, a sad situation for any company.

My Palm Pre is sitting forlornly on its Touchstone charger, a great phone but no longer sure when (or if) it can expect any further software updates. The Pre is a testament to how good the webOS platform really is, but that doesn’t seem to be enough to save Palm. That Touchstone charger is the single most innovative phone accessory to be released by anyone for years, yet it’s not enough either. It is a clear indicator of just how difficult the competitive smartphone market has become, when one of the best OS platforms coupled with great technology cannot turn the tide for Palm.

I have stated in the past that the only thing that can save Palm is an innovative (non-phone) product. A webOS tablet would at least break Palm out of the smartphone doldrums. Palm’s line of phones has not been enough to stave off disaster, so my thinking was that a radically different product would at least have a chance to make an impact. Now I’m not so sure, due to that timing thing. The iPad is selling like hotcakes, and as it’s the biggest competitor for a Palm webOS tablet, it’s probably too late.

The company has failed to capitalize sufficiently on the webOS platform — launched to great fanfare a couple of years ago — and is courting companies for a sale. Rumors of a potential sale of Palm have been swirling for a while, and an official search for a buyer will be announced soon according to Bloomberg.

Two companies mentioned to have an interest in acquiring Palm are Lenovo and HTC. Lenovo produces the ThinkPad line of notebook computers, and has recently entered the smartphone market through an acquisition of Lenovo Mobile Communication Technology Ltd. HTC is one of the largest makers of Android and Windows Mobile handsets. An acquisition of Palm by HTC would have definite ramifications in the smartphone world, as it would add Palm’s webOS to HTC’s already impressive product line.

HTC has recently been sued by Apple for alleged patent infringements, and an acquisition of Palm could play an unexpected role in that legal situation. Palm has a healthy portfolio of patents going back to the Palm Pilot days, and it’s possible these could be leveraged by HTC in its battle with Apple.

Anybody noticed how quiet it is on the Palm front? It seems we only hear anything about Palm and webOS when financial results get announced, and that’s never good news. Palm is in trouble by anyone’s reckoning, yet they are as quiet as can be. This is not a good strategy for Palm, but I’m afraid they are quiet because they have nothing to say. The Pre and Pixi haven’t sold in numbers to make a positive effect on the bottom line, and that’s not going to change.

The Sprint affiliation didn’t buy Palm much in the long run, and the carrier’s major marketing blitz behind the upcoming EVO with Android demonstrates clearly the webOS love is gone. Palm didn’t help its partnership with Sprint at all with the exclusive deal with Verizon, a desperate act to move handsets with the larger carrier. That hasn’t panned out with Verizon firmly in bed with Android, as the campaign behind the Droid and the buzzing about the Nexus One demonstrates.

Palm is going to bring its webOS phone line to AT&T, but that carrier is not going to make a splash with them either. AT&T is not about to upset the Apple cart for Palm, especially since sales numbers of Palm phones are not setting the world on fire. It’s just going to get worse for Palm, as sales numbers keep underwhelming analysts even with several U.S. carriers selling for them.

The time for incremental changes at Palm is over. No more minor hardware updates to the phones. No more incremental updates to webOS. This strategy has failed and it’s time to shake things up if Palm intends to make a serious run at survival.

How about if Palm announced the next major update to webOS, 2.0, would add support for larger slate devices? The webOS system would be outstanding on a tablet, and such an announcement would send the techerati into overdrive. That’s the kind of excitement Palm desperately needs, as long as they make good on such an announcement.

If Palm can’t produce a slate itself, maybe it should take on a partner. I suggest HTC, as they are often willing to jump on new things and they have the ability to make magic happen. Look what they’ve done with Android. Palm better do something unexpected this year, or the party may indeed be over.

This might be hard to believe with today being April Fools Day and all, but Verizon appears to be giving away 3G tethering with the purchase of a webOS phone. Prices on the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus have fluctuated throughout the day, but one constant is the Mobile Hotspot service — instead of $40 monthly, it’s nada. I don’t see any official press release from Verizon, but I did just run thorough the purchase process and here’s the feature showing at no monthly cost:

The official Palm blog also confirms it. The software for sharing your webOS mobile broadband connection was always free, but the service wasn’t, so this is an unprecedented and great deal. Without any additional fee, you can use the phone’s 3G data on five devices: say a netbook, notebook or one of those iPads that all the kids are talking about today. Remember though — there’s a 5 GB cap on data with the 3G Mobile Hotspot. The smartphone data plan is unlimited, but tethered usage isn’t. Of course, you’re getting that 5 GB for free now, so don’t start complaining about bandwidth caps, ‘k?

Palm today announced the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus are coming to AT&T's network. Wi-Fi at AT&T hotspots is included but will that be enough to move webOS handsets? AT&T will have to help market the phones while Palm hopes to compete with Apple's iPhone.

While many — including the stock market — are predicting Palm’s demise, the company rolls on. Timed nicely with the CTIA telephony trade show, Palm today announced that its Pre Plus and Pixi Plus handsets are arriving on AT&T’s network. After $100 mail-in rebate, the webOS phones are priced at $149 and $49, respectively. Considering that Palm outed GSM versions of its new phones last year, the move doesn’t surprise. The question now is: how much will the second largest U.S. carrier help Palm?

When Verizon Wireless began offering the two webOS devices in January of this year, the hope was that they would be big sellers. Unfortunately, limited marketing combined with bad timing didn’t provide the results Palm was looking for. Last week, on Palm’s quarterly results call, the company reported 408,000 handsets in customer hands, which is 29-percent fewer than the prior quarter. This is after the introduction of the webOS phones on the largest U.S. carrier, although Verizon only carried the handsets for just one month of the quarter. PreCentral noted that Jon Rubinstein, Palm’s CEO, thinks the Verizon launch timing hurt his company’s chances:

“I agree with your premise that if we could have launched at Verizon earlier, prior to Droid, that we would have gotten the attention that the Droid got and since I believe that we have a better product, I think we would have even done better.”

There’s no Droid on AT&T’s network to contend with, so that has to help Palm’s chances — at least until we see what Apple does. The iPhone is generally on a one-year refresh or update cycle, so within the next three months, many expect new handsets, an updated operating system and possibly price cuts on current models. It’s the third scenario that’s may impact Palm the most. Given the attention and high levels of praise for the iPhone, Palm would have a tough time selling webOS phones strictly based on a cost comparison. That’s where the marketing comes into play and AT&T’s efforts there are still an unknown. Another small factor is the recent release of Google’s Nexus One for AT&T. Although an unsubsidized $529 handset is a tough sell against a subsidized phone, it’s estimated that Google has sold 135,000 units in the first 74 days of availability. That’s almost one-third the number of webOS phones sold in one quarter without any carrier marketing or mainstream media commercials.

Unlike the Palm handsets for Sprint, the Palm devices won’t include free navigation with the data plan — instead, they’ll support the AT&T Navigator subscription service for an additional fee. But AT&T is leveraging its over 20,000 hotspots — the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus will seamlessly transition from 3G data to Wi-Fi when in range of an AT&T hotspot. If this move doesn’t buy more time — and generate more cash — for Palm, it’s possible the company finally gets purchased. Colin Gibbs offers his odds of different scenarios in case this plays out. But James thinks there’s still one last option for Palm in the heating up tablet market — a webOS slate could be just the ticket.

I think the AT&T move will simply buy more time for Palm. From a consumer standpoint, I recently dumped the Palm Pre I purchased simply because the operating system doesn’t yet feel finished and because there isn’t a wide range of apps available for it. Without the right tools in my kit, I can’t do my job. And without webOS devices gaining traction with consumers, developers will continue to focus where the money is on other, more popular platforms. The longer that takes, the tougher the situation gets for Palm and its customers.

Previously only on the iPhone, ZumoDrive today introduced a mobile client for Android and webOS devices. It's a top-notch solution for remote access to files, music or photos and works great for streaming tunes if you don't want to carry all of your digital media.

When I consider cloud services, one of the first things I look for is cross-platform support. That used to mean support for Windows, Mac and Linux computers. These days however, I also consider what mobile platforms work with the service. ZumoDrive just added appeal with news of both Android and webOS clients to complement its existing iPhone app. I’ve been using the software for the past few days on my Google Nexus One and it’s a must have for any ZumoDrive customers with a supported device.

Since ZumoDrive can sync any local computer file with the cloud, the new Android and webOS titles offer full access to files and folders stored online in a ZumoDrive account. It’s an easy way to get important files with just a phone. And that includes media files too — with the new ZumoDrive software, you can view your photos stored online or stream digital media like audio or video. The audio streaming is one of the features that first drew me to ZumoDrive — in the past, I used the iPhone client to stream music files that didn’t fit on my iPhone. It worked great back then and the Android experience is no different. Using the music player in the ZumoDrive client, I’ve been streaming tunes again. And since both Android and webOS allow third-party apps to run in the background, I enjoyed the streaming audio while multitasking.

One minor downside I came across is in playlist support. ZumoDrive does work with music playlists that you’ve created elsewhere, like iTunes, for example. But you can’t pick and choose these playlists for import — it’s currently an all-or-none situation with the playlists and iTunes libraries. On the plus side, ZumoDrive doesn’t require any changes to your local file structures. Using the ZumoDrive Console software, I can tell the service which folders to scan for changes — I don’t have to move them or store files in a special place. And once I tell ZumoDrive which folders to monitor, they simply appear on my phone. I linked the iPhoto library on my MacBook, for example, and shortly after doing so, I had mobile access to my photos, making it easy for viewing. I also linked my DoubleTwist folder since that’s what I use for music management. In the future, I’d love to see the ability to share or email these photos from my handset, but for now, just being able to get at them remotely is great. I was able to share a text file from the Documents folder, but can’t share pics at the moment.

I find the app very useful on my Android device and since the functionality is generally the same, I’d expect it be handy on a webOS device. In fact, I’ve missed the ZumoDrive app since I got rid of my iPhone a few weeks ago. The mobile software is free and if you already have a ZumoDrive account, it’s a no-brainer to download the new Android or webOS clients. If you’re not using ZumoDrive, but want to try a new cloud storage and synchronization solution, I recommend the look. A free gigabyte of storage is yours for the taking and the company reduced the monthly pricing for higher capacities about a year ago. It’s a good service made even better with the new mobile clients.

Here in the U.S., March Madness is upon us. The three week national college basketball tournament brings out fans from all walks of life, but how does one keep up with the action? These eight mobile methods work on phones and computers from the first tip-off.

Many in North America are still reeling from this weekend’s Daylight Savings Time change, and as I understand it, folks in Europe and Asia will enjoy a similar experience in the near future. There’s no experience like that of March Madness here in the U.S. though. Every year at this time, we participate in an exciting and wild nationwide college basketball tournament. The top 65 teams battle between the baskets in a bracketed elimination competition — win and you move on; lose and you go home. The three week event gathers fans all across the country, mainly due to the popularity of “NCAA pools” where would-be fortune tellers attempt to predict the winners. All in all, it’s a hectic event — possibly more for the observers than the players. Since we’re always on the go, here’s a number of ways to follow March Madness on a mobile.

1. CBS Sports March Madness on Demand (iPhone, iPod Touch = $9.99) — Ten dollars for an app with a limited shelf life sounds steep, but those suffering from a full case of March Madness will probably get their money’s worth. Live streams from all 63 games are available in the app from an EDGE, 3G or Wi-Fi connection. Brackets are constantly updated with scores and results, plus you can pause or rewind 30 seconds for another look at the big play. You don’t have to keep game info to yourself either — the app includes hooks into Facebook and Twitter for virtual cheering. And for the times you can’t watch the live stream, the configurable notifications and live radio broadcasts function as a sixth man.

2. CBS Sports March Madness on Demand Lite (iPhone, iPod Touch = Free) — A lighter sibling of the paid app above is this free version. You won’t get any live streams for free, but on-demand video highlights are available from every game as is news coverage and updates galore. The Facebook and Twitter connections of the pay version are also included, so nobody needs to know that you saved the ten bucks.

3. Live Scores (Android = Free) — Just looking for the basic scores and updates? Live Scores lives up to its name and is one of the few Android apps I could find. The software isn’t specific to March Madness, so after the install, tap the Menu and switch to NCAABB to follow along. After the tourney is over, you can use the app to follow scores for baseball, football, hockey and professional basketball.

4. College Basketball Live (Android = Free) — Like the Live Scores app, this title is simply good for keeping track of the live scoring. You can configure favorite teams though — handy to keep track of your top picks in the tournament. It’s great for the basics if you don’t want to use a web page to track scores and standings.

5. ESPN Tournament Challenge (iPhone, iPod Touch = Free) — This freebie offers nothing more than a way to manage brackets in either a private or public pool. ESPN is even offering $10,000 to whoever gains the most points using the app — each win gains you points, but the point values increase as the tournament progresses. Watch out for those upsets and don’t forget the Cinderella picks!

6. ESPN Mobile TV (various platforms on Sprint’s network, Included with Everything Data plans) — Just in time for March Madness, Sprint worked a deal with ESPN for live mobile sports coverage on various handsets like the Palm Pre, HTC Hero, Samsung Moment, Samsung Instinct, Blackberry Curve. As part of the Sprint TV package, the service is included with the Sprint Everything Data plan. Expect to see 23 live games from the men’s tourney — some are from the conference championships — and 19 women’s matches.

7. SlingPlayer Mobile (Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, Symbian S60, iPhone, iPod Touch, PalmOS – $29.99) — The price is a bit misleading here because the software is only part of the equation. You’ll also need Slingbox hardware connected to your home television set, but once you do, you’re in control. CBS offers regional coverage of all games, so you can simply stream them yourself. Better yet — if you can’t watch a game but have a DVR, SlingPlayer Mobile can control and playback the recorded game. And of course, you can keep streaming content long after the madness is over.

8. March Madness on Demand (PC or Mac with Silverlight installed = Free) — CBS knows that not everyone has an iPhone, but they still want to get the games — and those ads — in front of as many eyeballs as possible. NewTeeVee says that with Microsoft’s Silverlight plugin, you can tune in via the web from a netbook or notebook and watch all the action live in your browser. Just watch out for those 5 GB bandwidth caps if you decide to stream on the run over 3G, ‘k?

How do you plan to fight the madness while mobile? At this point, I’m wishing that Apple’s iPad was shipping prior to the NCAA tournament so I could watch on the “big” 9.7-inch display. Instead, I think I’ll be tuning in on a full-featured computer. Perhaps I can dig out that ol’ Samsung Q1UP with Intel 1.3 GHz Core Solo UMPC and set up a dedicated 7″ device to the web streams.

ComScore today released research on the U.S. smartphone market and the trends from the past two years appear to be continuing. In fact, the numbers jive quite nicely with the worldwide data provided by Gartner just last month. Here's a comparison and thoughts on future numbers.

ComScore today released research on the U.S. smartphone market and if you follow the market, you won’t see any surprises. Research In Motion, Apple and Google are still on the upswing, while Microsoft and Palm market share is down in the October 2009 to January 2010 time frame. ComScore points out the numeric market share change, but as I said last month when Gartner reported similar data for the past year, those numbers don’t tell the whole story. For example, the comScore data shows Microsoft losing 4 points of market share while Palm only lost 2.1 points. Based on that, it’s logical to assume that Microsoft is doing “worse” than Palm. I don’t believe that’s the case and here’s why: the percentage loss between the two time periods is an accurate representation of the rate of loss. In that situation, Microsoft lost 20.3% of the market it held in October, but Palm lost 26.92% of the share it had. The rage of change — either positive or negative — shows the momentum a platform has, or doesn’t. In other words — Palm is losing more of what it had than Microsoft.

So if there aren’t any surprises, why bother to share the data? Here’s a key reason — the rates of change coincide quite nicely with the worldwide Gartner numbers from last month. More information from multiple sources corroborates the trends and that’s important since sources measure in different ways. One major difference in the two reports highlights the U.S. vs worldwide market variability — Gartner rightly includes Symbian in their numbers, while ComScore doesn’t. Symbian should be included, no matter how small a share it has in the U.S., in my opinion. And this is also the first report I’ve seen that pegs Google’s market share above that of Palm’s in the smartphone market.

Aside from those points, it’s striking to see the similarities in the rate of change between Gartner’s numbers and the ComScore data. Here’s the percentage change from Gartner to refresh you memory.

Both show that Google’s Android is growing at a far faster clip than any other platform right now. And the pair of data points both indicate a continuing decline for Microsoft and Palm. Two sets of independent data don’t confirm anything specific of course, but they verify the platform shift rippling through the smartphone market.

What’s the rest of 2010 look like?

I fully expect these trends to continue with little difference through the end of 2010. Apple will likely speed up its growth rate with a new handset model this summer. Research In Motion will continue modest gains — bigger ones if it can mature its operating system and add a WebKit browser this year. Android’s momentum is likely to continue as more handset makers latch on to the platform and additional carriers pick it up. Microsoft will keep losing ground in 2010, but is poised for gains next year with the new Windows Phone 7 Series devices. And Palm appears to be treading water as people wait to see how webOS continue to mature and if it comes to new hardware.

Palm's Pre and Pixi have a new Facebook client, proving Murphy's Mobile Law -- I sold my Pre last month due to a lack of good software and now the software is better. The new version looks to be on par with the Android client.

While there’s no need to thank me personally, I’d like to think that I had something to do with the latest webOS enhancements. How’s that, you ask? Call it Murphy’s Mobile Law — as soon you sell a device due to features you don’t like, you can count on those features getting fixed. Right after I sold my Palm Pre last month, we saw a webOS firmware upgrade and now there’s a new Facebook client. Joking aside, the real folks that deserve the credit are Ben Galbraith and Dion Almaer in the Palm Developer Relations team as they did the Facebook coding for webOS.

The webOS Facebook app was always a sore spot with me. For starters, Facebook was on stage as an official launch partner when Palm debuted the Pre in January of 2009. By the time the device rolled out, all webOS users saw was Facebook contact integration — or contact overload, depending on your point of view — through Synergy and a mobile-friendly web version of Facebook. That “client” was very limited in terms of functionality. Some third-party apps showed promise, but I always expected that the best experience would come from developers at Facebook. Regardless, it doesn’t matter where the latest client app was developed — it’s out there in the App Catalog and based on Dieter Bohn’s video demo at PreCentral, I’d grab it I could.

Similar to the Apple iPhone version of Facebook — by far, my fave mobile client for the service — the update for webOS includes a thumbnail view menu for News, Photos, Search, Inbox, Events and your Profile. Missing for now are some enhanced features like notifications, favorite friends shortcuts and video playback. But all in all, the update represents a huge step forward for the client. Based on what I see, it’s probably on par with the Android version I’m using daily with my Nexus One. Like I said — Murphy’s Mobile Law!

Since I’m no longer a webOS user and some of you are — tell me what I’m missing in the new Facebook client. Was it worth the wait?
