Not too long ago, I posted about BookGlutton, a service which allowed for online collaborative reading. You could also upload your own work, but that wasn’t the main focus of the site. Smashwords, on the other hand, is a web site devoted to self-publishing. It doesn’t lend itself to collaboration, necessarily, but it does present another possible method of content delivery, and for web workers looking for another revenue stream, it may provide an avenue for monetizing your content.

For me, it also raises the age-old question: is self-publishing really just a form of vanity publishing, along with all the negative connotations that implies?

It’s a thorny question, and one that takes on new significance as we slowly but surely move away from print media towards online publishing. I went to school for writing, and had it drilled into me pretty much every day that unless it was someone else’s name on the masthead of the journal or press I was publishing with, I wasn’t accomplishing anything.

Online, however, many of the most successful professionals are self-published, and self-made. Darren Rowse, Guy Kawasaki and <del datetime="2009-02-13T15:46:55+00:00">Om Malik</del> Richard MacManus come to mind. They are dealing primarily in the medium of the blog, however. The stigma associated with self-publishing doesn’t seem to have entirely disappeared when it comes to books.

Smashwords is a service for self-publishing your own eBook. Once you’ve signed up for an account you can upload your original work and offer it for sale at a price of your own choosing. Your book will also be available for purchase via Stanza for the iPhone, the most popular and fastest-growing eReader available. Authors make a royalty of 85% of the net proceeds from the sale of their work. Readers using the service get free samples of all the books available on the site, and get access to search and library-building services.

It’s a good system, but will it work? Even if you already have a built-in readership from a successful blogging career, will users be willing to take the extra step and pay for your content in eBook form? The answer probably depends on what kind of content you’re offering. If you’re just repackaging your blog as paid content, it probably won’t pay off. But if you’re offering valuable content that extends, rather than mirrors, your blog-based content, Smashwords may be a useful platform.

To me, the benefit of a service like Smashwords, and self-publishing in general, is the same benefit that consulting firms get from preparing free research reports for distribution to clients. It’s a proof of competency, a means to show you can and will deliver the type of results they’re looking for. And with distribution via Stanza, there’s also the possibility that you could reach potential clients where you otherwise wouldn’t have, even if you do end up just reformatting your blog content for alternative distribution.

What do you think about self-publishing? Is it a good means to increase your revenue or profile as a web worker?

In the current economic climate, many web workers are trying to increase revenues by expanding their service offerings. One popular way of doing that is to offer remote desktop technical support.

There are many tools and services available that can get you connected remotely with users seeking technical support. In New Ways to Make Money Online, Mike and Aliza pointed us to Copilot and Bomgar, while I looked at how to Sell Your Expertise Online With Crossloop.

Another option in this space, which I have been trialing for the past few weeks, is NTRsupport.

NTRsupport is actually much more than just a remote access solution, it comprises a full suite of tools to provide end-to-end support, starting with a customizable FirstHelp web site.

FirstHelp is a self-help starting point for your customers to get support before initiating or requesting a remote session. With it you can create and customize a branded portal with news, support documents, FAQs and more. Your FirstHelp site can be open to the public or kept secure for your existing clients.

While the FirstHelp area is designed to be a first support step, you can also integrate support buttons into your existing web site or email. This makes it really easy for your contacts to connect with you for help via chat. The chat client is feature rich and allows for pre-scripted replies and push of images and URLs to the client.

If it is necessary to move to the next step, you can initiate a full remote session. There are multiple modes and options available ranging from desktop sharing to full control and administration.

The options and tools available to you in remote support mode are impressive. In addition to standard options to control screen size and resolution, you can easily transfer and push files, print remotely, or run a diagnostics report.

The diagnostics report is detailed and impressive. It gives you a full report on hardware and software, service packs, and other configuration details. Each report is stored as a snapshot in history so you can go back to review them at a later date to see changes made.

Also available are options for unattended remote support using what they term Installable Remote Controls (IRCs). These allow you log in remotely without user intervention.

Security and cross-platform compatibility are built right in and it seems to work well even over a dial up connection, although you may want to reduce the colors displayed.

I’ve really only scratched the surface of the features and functionality available as part of the NTRsupport service. It turns out to be one of those serendipitous things where the developers use their own product to support their own services internally and with their customers. This really shows as during a demo presentation and my own testing I got the impression that NTRsupport is thoughtfully developed.

While I have focused mostly on how this would work for an independent worker or small team, NTRsupport is an enterprise-capable system. It offers full queuing and routing capabilities and can even integrate with your existing ACD system so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel.

Pricing is dependent on number of operator licenses and Installable Remote Controls. They will help you put together a package that fits your business needs. I found pricing to be right in line with comparable services, but the addition of their outstanding FirstHelp functionality has me leaning in their direction. I particularly like the ability to brand and integrate the service into an existing infrastructure.

The folks at NTRglobal are offering WebWorkerDaily readers a complimentary demonstration, a 15-day free trial and a special offer of $1288 per license. To take advantage of this go ahead and request a quote, and be sure to include WebWorkerDaily in the comments. Someone will contact you and make the necessary arrangements.

Do you provide remote technical support? What tools do you use?

A little while ago, I reviewed the service offered by GigPark, which was essentially a referrals network to help people find and share service providers. Qapacity is a new tool that works along the same lines, although it goes about it in a completely different way. Qapacity seems more geared towards attracting service providers themselves, but it still has a lot to offer those looking to shop, not sell, too.

If you’re looking for another venue for promoting your services or investigating service providers to partner with, Qapacity is definitely worth checking out.

First, from the perspective of someone looking to sell their services, Qapacity presents a very attractive proposition. Basically, they give you a web site for free in exchange for your registration with their network. The web site they provide is designed to garner reviews from your current clients, in order to provide potential customers with testimonials about the quality of your work.

Upon signing up for Qapacity, you’re taken to your Dashboard, where you can fill in your profile details with the standard fare for social networks, and, if you want, offer a service to be added to Qapacity’s public listings. I noticed a strong resemblance to LinkedIn when browsing through the dashboard and profile options. When it comes to a site intended for professional networking, this is a good thing.

From the Dashboard, I proceeded to add a service to Qapacity, specifically my awesome freelance writing and editing abilities. The process was quick and painless, and once I’d provided a title, description and keywords for my service, I was able to specify a custom URL to point to my page under the “qapacity.com” domain.

You can customize your site’s content from top to bottom with Qapacity’s built-in WYSIWYG page editor, which also allows you to add modules. Modules available include video, maps, images, text and RSS feeds. You can add subpages that visitors can access via tabbed links at the top of your site, upload your own custom logo, and select from a few different themes and color combinations. It strikes me as a great way to set up a launchpad to refer people to from your Twitter account, for example, especially if you don’t have your own hosting and aren’t very comfortable with HTML.

As for sharing and promotion, which is the real purpose of the site, you’re constantly encouraged to either share your site via Facebook or email, or to invite other professionals to join in and grow Qapacity’s network. The idea behind the site, after all, is that you gather reviews and thus offer one-stop shopping for those looking for service providers.

From the perspective of someone looking for services, I found the interface to be underdeveloped. You can search for services by keyword, but there is no overall listing that you can browse. Some kind of broad categories and subcategories listing all services in that area would really add to Qapacity’s usefulness in this regard. Still, it was easy enough to find illustrators to work with for a promotional event I’m working on, but I had to know exactly what I was looking for to begin with.

Also, since Qapacity was originally a Spanish-language site, there aren’t many U.S. or North American-based providers available yet. Luckily with web work, that doesn’t always matter, but sometimes the language barrier comes into play.

Whether you’re looking to promote your own services, find a trustworthy provider, or find a partner for collaboration, any tool that provides meaningful connections with minimal investment is going to be useful, and Qapacity definitely accomplishes that goal. The major hurdle to success for Qapacity is getting community buy-in and promoting involvement, but the platform they’ve set up definitely encourages exactly that.

If you’re a web worker who appreciates some of the many good, free online video tutorials on applications and development tools relevant to your work, YouTube is definitely not the only place to turn. You can find a huge number of sophisticated, easy-to-digest video tutorials on tech topics at Best Tech Videos. The videos are categorized down the left rail of the site, so you can concentrate on Web 2.0, Development, Database, OS or other types of tutorials.

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but good video tutorials can often do you one better. Here are some of the types of tutorials you’ll find for free at Best Tech Videos.

In the Development category at the site, I noticed good tutorials on building a Flickr application using PHP. It features one of Sun Microsystems’ tech evangelists. There were also several videos on using Google App Engine. In some cases, the videos are housed at Best Tech Videos, and in other cases, the site links out to where they are located.

In the Web 2.0 category, you can find a useful presentation on mashing up Web 2.0 technologies for enterprise applications, and a good interview on the state of AJAX development. The OS category at Best Tech Videos also houses many tips for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux users. A search on Photoshop also led to countless tips videos for Photoshop.

If you happen to use open source applications, you’ll also find a large collection of tutorial and educational material in a recent roundup we did on the OStatic blog. It delves into tutorials for the GIMP graphics application, the OpenOffice suite of productivity applications and much more.

The recent rise in the popularity and availability of netbooks has led some wireless carriers to package the computers at significant discounts for customers who purchase subscriptions. According to a recent report by Lisa Thompson, a tech research analyst with firm JRPG, Apple may be in talks to work out a similar deal with O2, a U.K.-based wireless provider.

A subsidized laptop offering from Apple would help alleviate complaints arising from the October 14 event that pricing on their new notebooks remained too high. Thompson also thinks that Apple is keen to avoid a netbook, as it might cannibalize MacBook sales, so discounting an existing product through a third-party allows them to essentially have their cake and eat it too.

The model to be discounted is thought to be the $999 entry-level white MacBook, a likely choice because it would require a much smaller subsidy than any of the new aluminum models. Many other computer manufacturers, like Dell and Asus, currently offer netbook/subscription packages with wireless carriers like the one proposed between Apple and O2, though such bundles have failed to attract much interest in North America.

O2 is already the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the U.K., making it the natural choice for a laptop subsidy partnership. Vodafone and Orange currently offer netbooks bundled with mobile broadband subscriptions in the U.K. Vodafone has both £25 and a £30 per month plans, offering 1GB and 3GB of data transfer, each of which includes an Inspiron Mini, free of charge. Orange offers 3GB at £25 per month, and throws in an Eee PC 900 (WinXP, 16GB SSD) for no further cost. Both providers require a two year minimum subscription to get the free hardware. If Apple does go ahead and offer a similar deal in partnership with O2, expect similar monthly pricing and bandwidth limits, and not free, but deeply discounted hardware.

Would you sign a contract to pick up an Apple notebook for a low initial cost? Or are mobile broadband bundles just another example of the cheap razor/expensive blades school of marketing misdirection?

Apple may not have broken the $900 mark with the new line of laptops they unveiled at Tuesday’s event, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a never-before-used Mac at that price. As long as you’re willing to bury your head in the sand and pretend no new models exist, or your computing habits don’t require the absolute latest tech, you can get some pretty good deals on previous generation Apple notebooks.

Amazon.com, for instance, is offering a $700 (compared to its price at the Apple Store before Tuesday’s release) discount on MacBook Pros, which makes this 15-inch model not much more expensive than the now-discontinued black MacBook. While this is a great deal for those looking for a still-powerful laptop at an affordable price, those hoping for the sub-$900 laptop Tuesday likely won’t see $1,780 as much of a deal.

If you already had that $800+ tucked away for a new Mac, don’t go blowing it all on cheese doodles and beer to drown your sorrow. Best Buy is now offering the entry level 13.3-inch white MacBook for $849. Keep in mind, this is not the new entry-level white MacBook ($999) which now ships with a SuperDrive. Still, at $850, it’s almost an impulse buy for people holding that first student loan check and thinking about all the somewhat educational things they can do with it. The old MacBook Air is now down $400 from $1,799 to $1,399.

Apple themselves are offering some good deals via their refurbished hardware sales, the highlight being a well-spec’d 15.4 MacBook Pro 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, available for $1,799, a full $1,000 off of its original retail purchase price.

On the previously enjoyed front, Craig’s List and Kijiji have both seen a sharp increase in the number of ads offering MacBooks, MacBook Pros, and MacBook Airs for sale. While the used market appears flooded, price points have yet to see significant change despite the spike in supply, and in most cases it looks like you’d be better off buying new from authorized resellers.

Taking screenshots on Windows used to a laborious process, consisting of performing a print screen then editing the result in Photoshop. Leopard (and indeed, earlier editions of OS X) goes a long way to simplifying the process with different key combinations to achieve different results. It is possible to grab the whole screen, a single window, or a user defined area of the screen. However, I commonly find myself needing to take a screenshot of an entire webpage — not just the portion that is viewable in my browser window.

This is where WebKit2PNG and Paparazzi come in. The former is a command line utility for OS X which uses the WebKit engine (the software powering Safari) to generate full page screenshots. The latter is a piece of software which offers a user friendly interface to the command line utility, making it much easier to use. I’ll focus on the features of Paparazzi first before going a little technical to explain some of the extra features offered by WebKit2PNG.

Paparazzi

Using Paparazzi is simple. Open up the application and enter your URL. You can choose the size of the window that you’re emulating and also choose to crop the resulting image. It takes a few seconds to download the screenshot, then there are several export options to different image formats.

The advantage of using this method over the in-built screenshot tool is that it takes the full length image of an entire webpage. The various export options also let you immediately compress the image, rather than being required to import into Photoshop to make changes.

WebKit2PNG

If you would like a higher degree of customization in your screenshot, or need to automate the process, you’ll need to delve a little deeper into WebKit2PNG. This is a command line tool which allows you to either take a standard cropped screenshot, or the longer variety as produced by Paparazzi.

One of the requirements to run the tool is PyObjC 1.1. This is bundled by default with Leopard, but if you’re missing it for any reason it will need installing before you proceed. It simply provides a method for executing the Python code which WebKit2PNG is built upon.

The process of taking a screenshot can be as simple as typing:

python webkit2png-0.4.sh http://theappleblog.com

This would produce three images in the current directory. One is a cropped 200x150px thumbnail, another is a full length thumbnail at 240px wide, and the final one consists of the full width, full length screenshot. The great thing about this tool is the level of customization available, some of which options are as follows:

-W WIDTH, –width=WIDTH : initial (and minimum) width of browser (default: 800)
-H HEIGHT, –height=HEIGHT : initial (and minimum) height of browser (default: 600)
–clipwidth=WIDTH : width of clipped thumbnail (default: 200)
–clipheight=HEIGHT : height of clipped thumbnail (default: 150)
-s SCALE, –scale=SCALE : scale factor for thumbnails (default: 0.25)
-o NAME, –filename=NAME : save images as NAME.png,NAME-thumb.png etc
-F, –fullsize : only create fullsize screenshot
-T, –thumb : only create thumbnail sreenshot
-C, –clipped : only create clipped thumbnail screenshot
-d, –datestamp : include date in filename
-D DIR, –dir=DIR : directory to place images into

The variety of options available allow you to essentially create any size and layout of screenshot you require. The script could even be built into an Automator workflow to process a batch of files at once, or upload them to an FTP server after the script has finished running — the possibilities are endless!

A few other screenshot tools

Whilst these two tools are great at creating full page screen captures, there are a few other notable tools out there for taking advanced screenshots on your Mac:

Snapz Pro – Takes various screenshot styles and can also record video

Screenshot Plus – A fairly full featured Dashboard widget

SnapNDrag – Click a button and drag the screenshot… very simple!

Are there any other tools or techniques you use for taking screenshots? Let me know in the comments — I’d be intrigued to hear about them.

We’ve shown you ways to create ringtones for your iPhone using your Mac, but with the newly released YouTones ($4.99) application from FunMobility, you can now make them on your iPhone. YouTunes is already an established name in the ringtone industry, having previously been available for other handsets on most networks, including AT&T and Verizon Wireless.

Making ringtones with YouTones is, as the name implies, mostly about you. You singing, you swearing like a drunken sailor, you doing pretty much anything you can record with the iPhone’s mic. Yes, we realize how dangerous this could be. But it could also be a lot of fun, plus it’s cheaper than buying ringtones from iTunes at a buck a pop, and you don’t need to be near your Mac if you’re struck with the impossible-to-resist urge for a change in your call notification habits.

The app sports a nice background/splash screen, and the home page that pops up tells you exactly what to do to get started: pick a theme, record, download or share. Themes are effect sets that transform your voice. Examples include “Crazy Toad,” “Cousin Billy Bob,” and “Drill Sargeant,” and each sounds pretty much like what the name would imply. There’s even “Dark Lord,” and you’ll never guess who it sounds like. Hint: it rhymes with “Darth Nader.”

Overall, kind of silly and pointless, which describes most of the app store. Handy if you really want to annoy the heck out of your friends by setting your ringtone to “Breaking news, I’ve just received word that…yes, it looks like I am indeed receiving a phone call.” using the News Story theme. Which will never get old. Ever.

blinkBox didn’t get very far up the wow-o-meter the first time we saw it. Using authorized clips of movies as web greeting cards? Whoo-hoo.

But the greeting cards were actually a sort of Trojan horse for the company, blinkBox CEO Michael Comish told us last week. According to comScore, the site now has 400,000 uniques per month, all from the UK — which is actually not so bad there, considering the size of the population. “Clips is a way to get 1 million users, not run a business,” he said. “Our model is free clips, free TV, and paid-for films.”

Now that blinkBox has deals to distribute content in Europe from nearly all the major Hollywood studios, Comish is planning to launch later this year an expanded ad-supported site for “catch-up TV” with the goal of becoming the European Hulu. The company hasn’t announced all its partners yet, but the public ones include Warner Brothers, Universal, Paramount, FremantleMedia, Aardman and Discovery. All the deals allow for sampling, personalizing and embedding, said Comish. (Surfing the site from the U.S. I frequently ran up against this cute little geo-blocking error message: “Argh! We’re sorry but because you’re not currently in the UK you can’t watch this right now. The weather’s probably better where you are though.”)

First up for London-based blinkBox, naturally, is the UK, where competitor Kangaroo — a joint Internet venture between BBC Worldwide, ITV and Channel 4 — has to wait till January on a ruling about whether it is an unfair monopoly. blinkBox, which has an undisclosed amount of funding from Arts Alliance, Eden Ventures and Nordic Venture Partners, then plans to launch Hulu-like sites in France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Of course, Hulu — which currently restricts almost all of its content to U.S. viewing, but broke into the top 10 most-trafficked U.S. video sites less than two months after launching — has its own designs on international expansion. But it’s Comish’s somewhat logical view that Hulu will go to Australia and South America first, where it can more easily use its existing connections at News Corp. and NBC to get content rights.

Comish, meanwhile, says because there’s currently not that much video inventory in the UK, blinkBox can command extremely high CPMs — in the neighborhood of £30 ($53) — for the time being.

Sounds like a nice alignment of circumstances for blinkBox, but also a delicate one, and nothing close to a sure bet. If the U.S. is any example, it took a bizarre and unforeseen business pairing to get the Hulu joint venture off the ground. Can a little venture-backed startup replicate that success? We shall see.

It pays to have big media backers. Case in point: Hulu, which will not only be offering season premieres of hit TV shows from FOX and NBC, but will be debuting a number of shows online before they appear on television.

Over the next seven weeks Hulu will kick off the fall TV season with shows like Prison Break, Bones, House, Heroes, The Office and 30 Rock.

Additionally, in a bid to generate some online buzz, the site is getting Knight Rider, Lipstick Jungle, Chuck and Life a week before launching on television.

Putting select shows online before they air on oldteevee is becoming par for the course for networks. Last year, HBO released the Flight of the Conchords pilot on MySpace, iFilm and iTunes before it went up on the pay cable channel, and earlier this year NBCU launched season four of Battlestar Galactica on SciFi.com 10 hours before it was on television, and Showtime premiered the season two opener of The Tudors on YouTube.

Viacom, which is suing YouTube for $1 billion, issued the following statement about the Veoh ruling:

“Even if the Veoh decision were to be considered by other courts, that case does nothing to change the fact that YouTube is a business built on infringement that has failed to take reasonable measures to respect the rights of creators and content owners.”

YouTube, meanwhile, issued a statement of its own:

“It is great to see the court confirm that the DMCA protects services like YouTube that follow the law and respect copyrights.”

But corks shouldn’t be flying off champagne bottles at YouTube HQ quite yet. As Steve wrote earlier this week, the court was quick to point out that the ruling in the Veoh case wasn’t a get-out-of-jail-free card for all video sites, and the judge’s decision was “not intended to push the boundaries of safe harbor so wide that less-than-scrupulous service providers may claim its protection.” The IO Group, which lost the copyright infringement fight with Veoh, failed to follow notification procedures spelled out in the DMCA, and IO’s video clips didn’t have copyright notices.

How’s an avid online video watcher supposed to get the latest episodes without leaving the computer on all the time? A new chipset from Intel might solve this problem, and save some energy (I’m repping NewTeeVee sister site Earth2Tech here), by allowing media providers to wake your snoozing PC up and automatically download fresh content. A new motherboard from the chip giant allows for Remote Wake technology without any extra cards or chipsets. Intel has already partnered with several media providers, including place-and-time shifting media manager Cyberlink, VoIP provider JAJAH, media manager Orb and P2P provider Pando.

Combining this hardware feature with a variety of content providers will allow users to remotely wake their PC and start downloading video so it will be ready and waiting when they get home. Once the download is complete the computer will nod back off to sleep, overall saving a bit of power, the companies claim. Intel expects to start shipping the new motherboards next month.

The service could allow for periodical content you subscribe to, like TV shows, to be automatically pushed to your PC so that the whole show is there and downloaded as soon as possible. While streaming is getting faster all the time, having the latest content from your favorite subscriptions proactively pushed out to your PC could be convenient. It’s annoying when you’re trying to sync your mobile device one last time before running out the door only to discover that your computer hasn’t pulled down the last night’s episodes yet. And as Om points out, with your PC increasingly becoming a media hub for your whole home, this “could make Pando quite viable as a desktop-oriented content delivery network.”

It’s not clear how much energy this will actually save and it will only work with the purchase of new Intel hardware, but we’re glad hardware and software makers are taking note of consumers’ concerns over energy consumption. And any services that encourage people to make better use of their existing power management settings are welcome additions. When Pando wakes your computer up remotely it doesn’t turn on your monitor and automatically turns your audio off, saving energy and preventing your roommate from suspecting a ghost in the machine.

Chinese P2P solutions provider Vatata, whose similarly named P2P streaming platform Vakaka we wrote about last year, has developed a set-top box solution to bring a Joost-like P2P TV experience to the living room. It provides access to both the company’s own P2P network for live streaming video as well as public P2P networks and protocols such as Emule, Gnutella and BitTorrent for media downloads.

Vatata’s CEO Jian Song told me that the company already has three customers in China that licensed the platform for their own products, with TV manufacturer Skyworth and set-top box maker Himedia being two of them. The first devices featuring the solution are supposed to hit the shelves in China this summer.

Song told me that Vatata’s product has been successfully tested with a variety of Linux-based set-top boxes. Vatata’s team was even able to run the code on the relatively low-end Neuros OSD Media Center, according to Song.

Vatata’s solution will not only use BitTorrent, but will feature access to a P2P search engine as well as a link database compiled from P2P web sites. Device makers would have to maintain these databases, so they would be the ones to deal with copyright issues. And if a device maker isn’t willing to take the risk to become the next Pirate Bay? The device doesn’t depend on it, Song explained, since consumers can still enter P2P download links on their own.

Song stressed the fact that devices using the Vatata solution itself are legal, even if some consumers might chose to break the law with it. He also wants to play fair both with P2P networks and ISPs’ resources. Users of the former will be glad to hear that the Vatata solution will not only leech, but also seed content, meaning that it will provide upload capacity to help out with the distribution of content. Song wants to please ISPs by eventually incorporating new network-aware technologies like P4P that will prioritize downloads within an ISP’s own network.

When will we be able to get such a Chinese P2P set-top box at Best Buy or other electronics retailers? Song would only say that he has been in talks with some prospective customers in the U.S., so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Carnegie Mellon professor Randy Pausch became an Internet inspiration when he uploaded his Last Lecture to the Net in the fall of 2007 — an academic exercise (if you were going to give one last lecture, what would it be?) that in Pausch’s case was all too relevant, as he had recently been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. In the 100-minute talk, Pausch refuses pity, does push-ups, and preaches tenacity, saying, “If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself.”

Pausch died today from complications due to cancer. From the USA Today obituary:

“I knew what I was doing that day,” he wrote in the introduction of his best-selling book, also titled The Last Lecture. “Under the ruse of giving an academic lecture, I was trying to put myself in a bottle that would one day wash up on the beach for my children.”

Over the past few weeks, there have been a flurry of announcements from Microsoft, Netflix, TiVo, YouTube, Roku and others detailing how their devices can be used to play movies and other video-based content, delivered via the Internet, on the TV. Industry insiders are speculating that with these announcements the tide is finally turning, that Internet-delivered video will soon make a big impact in the consumer living room.

When looking at any new technology offering, however, market penetration rates are crucial.
